and Dreger has almost lost all credibility, just talks out of his ass now, was better when he didn't have his "mailbag" and just reported the deals that happened

Yeah, now that I think about it should not be surprising, when you think what players normally get on July 1st. Gomez 7.3 and stuff like that.

That would be ridiculous. And we thought the Jeff Finger, Wade Redden, and Mike Komisarek contracts were bad. I guess one good year will make some GMs throw stupid money at a player.

They sure did and I hope other GMs around the league learned from their mistake.

So he has a good first half of the year and now he's worth 5 million? Gimme a break!

Why?

Made the playoffs last year, have a solid team(without stars)*, best prospect pool in the league-with guys ready to come up in trhe upcoming years.

It's not like Garrison is our only good defenseman

*Decent enough team to stay competitive in the Eastern conference.

Love it. 5 x 5M is what I'd pay. Purely high end defensive d-men get in the high 3s nowadays. Garrison has also cultivated a cannon shot from the point that would force any PK to defend differently. Even if the accuracy varies slightly from year to year the velocity won't. Switching from Campbell to Pietrangelo is no step down. I really hope this is true. If James Wisniewski is worth 5.5M per in UFA then Garrison is worth 5M. Garrison has been #1 on my wishlist for months.

That wasn't even a very impressive season. That's a Mason Raymond season. Yay.

I'd give him that much from a Sens perspective, 2 years max though.

I agree, I don't see why some people are so surprised at 5 million.

I'd take this guy at 5 million, 10 times out of 10 before I would take Oduya at 3.4.

I'm interested in Columbus really going hard after him. Get him for around 5 million and trade Wisniewski.

Every big UFA contract is something of a risk. That's the trade-off for not having to give up assets to add a top player. In Garrison's case, the big risk is the offense is a total fluke, even though defensemen blossom late all the time. But even if that's the case, paying him 5x5 your huge overpayment downside is what, a little over a million per year? He's a rock solid defense-first dman who plays top minutes, all situations, PP/PK, hits, blocks shots, plays against top lines and thrives. That's your downside risk, that you're overpaying by ~1M or so for excellent defense. If, on the other hand, the shot remains as potent as it looked this year, now 5x5 is a steal.

This thread needs more Fehr Time to tell us how Garrison would be insulted by $25m and hopefully some GM will give him the respect he deserves with a 10 year, $120m deal.

It would be awfully hard to imagine the Blues committing 25M to Garrison after just dumping 9 on Jackman and needing to spend probably ~60M on Petro and Shattenkirk over the next few years.

Let's keep it in perspective. Over the next 5 years the Blues are going to have to spend 250-300 million on contracts.

And we're talking about a third of that on four defensemen. I don't know that that's necessarily bad, but it would be surprising for this organization.

Of course, I suppose there's no guarantee Shattenkirk is here much past his ELC, but that would be a shame.
