I hope it's the Isles. He and Streit dropping bombs from the blueline? Sign me up! His defensive ability would be terrific as well.

Blues fans shouldn't be surprised that the offense is more or less set (Langenbrunner & Nichol will probably return but short of a hockey trade that's about it) but the defense is ripe for a major upgrade and that player is going to be well-paid if they're truly getting a top-pair caliber defenseman. Last summer management set expectations that the Blues would do little and they did little, signing a few vets for better depth. This summer the clear expectation-setting is that they're looking to be "active" and aggressive. Armstrong talked about "premier players" and the entire focus is on a top-pair partner for Pietrangelo. They will certainly bid for Suter and if Garrison reaches UFA him too. They might be priced out of the Suter sweepstakes but they can absolutely win the Garrison bidding if the high bid is 5x5. Arnott (2.875), Colaiacovo (2.5) and Huskins (1.0) will all not return, plus the 750K they save on Stewart/Jackman over last season, that's a little over 7M they're saving. Half of that will go to increases in Perron/Oshie contracts but they can pay Garrison and not have a payroll much different than last year. Also there will be more true sellouts at higher ticket prices and Garrison is a huge upgrade of talent over Colaiacovo.

That's just ridiculous. The guy is a solid defensive defenseman who enjoyed one of those seasons where things go right and he popped in 16 goals. Suddenly he wants $5 million? Wow.

No one should be surprised by this. We all saw it coming. Let's not pretend that we don't follow hockey when a player is due to cash in. He will earn his money after having a solid contract year, this is nothing new. His hit should probably be mid3M, but will 5+M based on how many teams are going to be bidding on him.

If Jeff Finger was signed for 3.5 M a year the last time there was a shortage of defensemen on the market, then Garrison going for 5 M a year is unfortunately predictable.

Thank god he's buried in the minors. Finger isn't even an NHL defenseman let alone a $3.5m defenseman.

I hope not. Not at five million.

If Gillis signs this guy for 5M per he is stupid. Ehrhoff wanted similar money and he let him walk. Ehrhoff > Garrison

Not shocking

Weak UFA market adds to the already inflated prices

We saw the Hawks in 08 and Jackets in 11 overpay badly for dmen (Campbell and Wisniewski)

Souray had several good years in Mtl and Garrison has more NHL games then Finger

No deal will be as recent Finger one for a while

Finger was almost as bad as when the Rangers gave Scott Fraser a bag of money when he was FA

3.75M$ is the max I'd give him. He's rock solid defensivly and adds some offense but without Campbell setting him up he would had 5 goals or so

Tallon will probably give him that to be honest.

He's probably the 2nd best defenseman available so he's going to get paid by a loser from the Suter sweepstakes.

Panthers fans see Garrison's contract is up this year as a pending UFA: Oh I see, very sneaky, Mr. Garrison.

I really hope he doesn't walk, he was awesome for us, but for that much, I don't know, I wouldn't risk it. One year does not a career make. Would Tallon pay that much? Well he's done crazier things, but we've got the defensive depth to let him go if need be. If so, I would hope they could trade his rights than lose him for nothing.
Do any of Florida's prospects bring a similar game? If so, then I (being Tallon) would have no problem in letting him walk.

This. He'll get what he wants once Suter signs somewhere.

Robak, maybe offensively.
Petrovic is more of a physical shutdown guy.
(soon to be NHL guys)

It will hurt the Panthers to see him leave, but, it might hurt them more to keep him around for 5years at that price.
Jovo is at 4mil per year, Campbell at 7.1, Kulikov is a rfa, and adding another big contract back there will limit who they can sign to help with scoring-forwards wise.

Id say a big defender who can chip in 25-30 points should be worth around 4 mil on the open market. 5 years is a long time too.
