Is micheal backlund a bust?

I feel the guy has been a disappointment for us after all that hype about him being a number 1 center man and compared to the likes of joe Thornton. What do you guys think? Should we give him 1 more year? Or should we sent him packing somewhere else in hopes of getting a draft pick at this upcoming draft?

Don't know who compared him to Thornton.

He was a 24th overall draft pick. He will never be a number one centre, but he can still be a guy who puts up 50 points regularly from the second line while being above average defensively.

Wouldnt compare him to any 1st line center. Can be a good two way 2nd line center with good hands, passing and speed. Id give him a 2 year 1.5 million contract this offseason, if he shows no improvement then yes he is a bust.

Who the **** compared him to Joe Thornton? Any way he is out producing Eller to this point who was the #13th pick that year and Montreal fans are still very high on him why shouldn't we? Anyone who thought he was going to be a top center is going to be disappointed but he still has time to grow and become a very good second line center. How can I player that has played almost 150 games and done decently in them be called a bust before they turn 24?

I can honestly say that I have never heard him be compared to the likes of Joe Thornton.

He was always projected to be a solid two way player that's likely upside was as a decent to good 2nd line center.

It's not really that surprising or disappointing that his development as gone as it has. I would say the offensive expectations from us Flames fan were always slightly misguided due to the success he had at the WJC's.

Management should absolutely hang on to him as realistically he is right where a late 1st round pick should be in terms of his development.

No he's not a bust.

He's an NHL player, and will be for a long, long time IMO.

Just because he hasn't lived up to the lofty expectations of some Flames fans (yet), doesn't mean he's a bust.

I will say though, I do need to see something from Backlund this season. If we see nothing, then I'm done with him.

He's far too frail right now, like a twig. He needs to add some muscle. He's not a small guy, so he shouldn't be playing like one.

how is he frail? He broke a finger (no amount of buckling up would avoid that) and then got sucker punched and was out the rest of the year.

Is Backlund a bust, no. Is he capable and does he need to produce more, absolutely.

Zajac? Always reminded me of him.

Its way too early to be giving up on the kid give him one more year.

Speaking of Joe Thornton look how he performed in his 21 year old season...bet they would of regretted moving him.

Give him some time, This is only his third season in the NHL and the kid is only 23. At worst he is a third line centre right now, and they are important to a team also. I believe he will become a solid second line centre by the time he hits 25. Give him time guys, prospects just don't develop right away. Some take some pruning.

No. Frankly, I'm not sure why anyone is calling him a bust after a grand total of less than two full seasons in the NHL; its bizarre really. I think the likes of Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane, Stamkos, and all the other elite talents who came into the league as teenagers and made immediate impacts, have to a certain degree, corrupted fans into thinking that if a player isn't fully established by the time his ELC contract is finished, they're busts. Which is a mistake.

And while he was hyped up a bit after a good WJC performance, I recall that even as he was drafted, the best comparison was Daymond Langkow, which still stands today.

Tzachuk, Fata, Chucko and Cameron are considered busts. Big difference with a player like Backlund who is not.

I remember his draft year some guys were saying his hands and vision were compared to joe Thornton. Not his overall play. But I still expected sop much from the guy, there was so muh hype about him last offseason and he didn't even show up

Yeah, pretty much this summarizes my thoughts on the Thornton comparison. If that's who you were expecting yeah, he's a "bust".

I think Backlund rounds into a Langkow/Stajan type. Better than Stajan, not as good as Langkow in his prime. That type of player though. I originally hoped he'd be a better version of Langkow. I think he's more skilled, just not as smart.
