On a side note, would you ask any other celebrity (or anybody at all) the question on spending their money?

If asked you how you spend your earned money, you would have told me "None of your business". And that would be a 100% appropriate response.
It was a rhetorical question that led to some mildly funny responses. Relax.

if you lambasting Bryz for making $ 1o mil. this year and not living up to his expectations, what reaction would you expect when you are asking how he spends his money?

I am not uptight, and I am not Bryz defender, but these kind of questions rub me the wrong way.

You did not ask this question for any other Flyer, so it was not a rhetorical question coming from you.

I do not care how he spends his money as long as he shuts the net.

As for relaxation part- I am: a few beers and smoked ribs- what can be better?

He wouldn't sign here because a bear was seen just west of Toronto last week.

Dude, Bryzgalov was awful this year. He had a flash in the pan month where the defense was just as strong if not stronger than him. He's an average goalie making superstar money. It's going to be a big problem a couple years from now.

curious how many games ???

curious what the fans here think is gunna be the sample size for next year in terms of what to expect out of Bryz ???

20 ?

half a season ??

couple of more complete years ???

personaly i think what we saw from Bryz over the course of teh season is what he will be like going foward no matter how big/small of a sample size you take into account..

but i'm interested in seeing were peoples thoughts lie now..

at what point do you step back and say "ok i guess this is the real Bryz ?".. either good or bad.

I want to say the whole year, but 40 games will be the true test for me. I am willing to give the pass for the 1st year in this **** show market for goalies, but after 40 games I think we will know 100% what we have in Bryz.

Just check his post all star stats, and postseason performances.

The guy isn't a bad goaltender. I don't know where the notion comes from.

How long will he get? 0 bad games.

How long should he get?

That's sort of a misleading question. Do I expect March 2012 Bryz? No. Do I want him to be December 2011? No.

If he can be solid at the start (.905-.915), I won't complain. All of the other numbers are subject to the rest of the team that we ice.

Giroux joined Mike Missanelli on 97.5 The Fanatic to discuss a variety of subjects — the EA NHL 13 cover vote, his wrist injury, if he’s watching the Stanley Cup finals — with his most intriguing comments came on the subject of Bryz.

GIROUX: If you don’t know what to expect coming into Philly, it’s not like in Phoenix — they don’t have a lot of media and stuff. It’s Philly, everybody’s a big Flyers fan and it’s great.

He didn’t know how it would be, but at the end of the season, like you said, he kind of adapted himself and he was good with the fans and he was playing his best hockey at the end, too.

Obviously next year he’s gonna know what to expect and if I had to predict anything he’s gonna be the best goalie in the league next year — I’m pretty sure that’s what’s gonna happen.”

Meltzer Weighs in on the Bryz Debate

Well I was thinking this deserved it's own thread but figured this thread needed a bump. Also we can't go too long without a healthy and at times polarizing Bryz debate...

This was a long "musing"...he made a lot of good points but may need to read it again and break it down. Seems the main premise is that the Bryz hate is not completely reasonable and if Bryz winds up winning a cup all the hate will disappear. Bbviously, there is more nuance but that is the watered down version...

Thoughts?

The trashing and scapegoating of Ilya Bryzgalov over the past year has been carried to such ridiculous proportions that I think a little counterweight is in order to present a more realistic and balanced picture both of his 2011-12 season and prospects moving forward.

No one would tell you that Bryzgalov had the type of season that the team hoped to see. He was extremely inconsistent, sometimes within the same game. He was brilliant in early October and throughout the month of March. Otherwise, you never knew what you were going to get from game to game, period to period and even shot to shot.

Throughout the season, Bryzgalov was guilty of some appalling lapses of concentration. There were too many times he could have made saves by simply having his stick along the ice or tracking the puck a little better. His puckhandling at times was adequate and other times was atrocious.

Then again, there were also plenty of times where Bryzgalov saved the team's bacon. What you saw at the start of the season in the month of March was that when the players in front of him collectively committed themselves to team defense, he was capable of performing on par with the best goaltenders in the league.

The truth of the matter was that the Flyers' team defense both in the regular season and playoffs was as streaky and inconsistent as the goaltending the club received. In hockey, these two things walk hand in hand. When one is out of synch for long enough, it inevitably drags the other down with it over time.

Yea I think the major thing Bryz needs to work on is his focus and his consistency, basically work to avoid the "bad goals." However, watching some highlights of this team's season and the playoffs, our defensive zone coverage is atrocious. Yea sometimes Bryz looks terrible on some shots, but when guys are wide open in the defensive zone, even the best goalies aren't going to save every shot. I'm not giving Bryz a free pass, but he needs better defensive team play.

I hope with a renewed effort by the defense and the forwards next year to improve their defensive zone coverage that Bryz can turn in a strong season.

You have to figure there's no way he'll have as bad an overall season as he did. That in itself is a positive thing.

What we learned is that Bryz is not the kind of goalie where the Flyers can stand on his shoulders (i.e. he is tall but no giant). We paid him like a Lundqvist, Quick, Rinne type goalie and hoped he would be that but he's a goalie that requires more support than we thought. Then again with the Flyers style and D corps as it presently stands and not to mention all the transition he had to deal with ..it would follow that last year was an anomaly of sorts for Bryz..or at least we hope it was an outlier year for him. I think it was....he should do better unless he comes into camp apathetic and fat again....

While I agree with the overall premise of your post, Lundqvist, Rinne, and Quick all have excellent defenses playing in front of them. If you stick any of those goalies in front of the team defense we played last year they don't put up nearly the numbers they did.

Don't forget the numbers Bryz put up in front of a great defense in Phoenix...
