Have confirmed Bob McKenzie's report. Staal did turn down a 10-year offer from the Penguins. Might mean he still wants to keep options open.

No, I understand his position in the world - thats why I follow him and not many others when it comes to hockey, but he never use to report on rumors. He didn't care about being "first" when it came to reporting things. He's always waited until he knew the answers, where as, now, he's "hearing"

Bob is the Adam Schefter of hockey. When they say something, it's legit.

Confirmed by Molinari and he never reports rumours under any circumstances.

Well that sucks if it's true. Get the best possible assets out of him. No third line player + pick + pick + prospect crap. If Staal leaves, I want something damn solid coming back.

**** if Shero let's this run out to FA, I have a very hard time seeing that happen though.

I'm all aboard the Sutter+8th pick train now.

Is everyone with an old Kris Beech jersey just going rip off the letters and sew Sutter on it? That number has a lot pedigree, Beech, Cal O'Reily, Chris Conner and so on. Can't wait for selection of Teuvo Teravinen at 8 for an influx of Scandinavian talent.

I'd rather address as many things as possible than just one to be honest. If we can get a top 10 pick a kunitz type winger and a good defenseman I'm set.

The big question is why did he turn it down? No one knows. How often are first offers accepted? Not very. Mountain out of a molehill.

We're between such a huge rock and hard place. Keeping Staal probably gives us a better chance to win, but then we'll end up losing him for nothing. I don't envy Ray right now.

I remain convinced that the biggest competitive advantage in hockey is to get value for your dollar. In that regard you cant go into a trade thinking that youll just take the best collection of talent. It has to be cost controlled talent.

Not only that but the relative value has to be better than the value that staal might provide playing here one more year at 4 million dollars.

If you really want to maximize value for staal you trade him for early picks, for good prospects and for high ceiling players who are still on ELC. You dont trade him for established talents who already reached free agency and are getting paid market value. If you want market value talent then you can just sign someone in free agency.

It was pointed out elsewhere that when we were in the cup finals both staal and malkin were still cost controlled. Cost controlled talent is good. Get some more.

If staal really turned down a ten year offer then i am majorly sad. If youre not sad about the thought of losing him, im confident that you will be when we start having to play against him.

If he's not willing to negotiate with another team this offseason, I'd say keep him for a year. What we'd get in return for one year of Staal isn't worth giving up another year with him on a Cup run.

What would you guys think about Staal for Joffrey Lupul + Jake Gardiner?

Darren Dreger reporting J. Staal may have spurned 10 years, $60 million from Penguins. Frontrunners if Jordan is shopped is Carolina.

No one would cough up much to negotiate early with Jordan Staal. In fact he might bring the least amount that any player in early negotiating rights because of his strong ties to family members in the league. You really think someone like Minnesota is gonna give up a lot to negotiate early with him when there's a huge chance he'd end up in Carolina?
The Pens are a cap team though. Outside of Crosby and Malkin, they have to pinch pennies where they can. Why offer Staal the max deal right away?

I could see your second point though. But right now it is just speculation that Staal only wants to play for Carolina.

I'll be interested to hear what the caphit was on that longterm deal. I don't see why Staal would ever turn down a ten year deal if he wanted to stay unless the money wasn't right.

I guess we have to trade him now. If he rejected this offer, itīs basically clear, that Staalīs not a Penguin in 2013/2014. We have to get something for him.
