According to Bob MacKenzie, Staal turned down a 10 year contract from Pit.

I dont want Staal or Nash. But just putting this out there for you rumor mongers.

The problem with trading for Staal is you pay top dollar and only get that guy for 1 year.

He wants out of Pitt with a chance to get more ice time and a bigger role with a new team, he wont ever get that with the Penguins.

Staal makes sense for Carolina but I think they're grooming Brandon Sutter for that Staal/Richards/Stoll role.

Staal is entering the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $4 million per year. Though just 23 years old, under the current collective bargaining agreement he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2012-13 season.
Why are players hitting UFA status at such a young age? These new rules are ridiculous.

Bring it back to 31.

Also it's kinda sad to see Crosby and Malkin take discount to stay put while Talbot and Staal are being straight up *****es.

This upcoming season is his 7th pro season, that's why he'll be an UFA next offseason.

This isn't about the money. Staal wants a bigger role than 3C and the rumors have it that he will sign in Carolina with his brother next year as a UFA.

According to Mckenzie, word is Justin Schultz wants to play in Canada and preferably on a team where he can come in and be a go-to guy. He mentioned Edmonton as a fit.

Makes perfect sense. He fits pretty much anywhere except Vancouver (lots of depth, close to the cap) and Toronto (lots of D, although they could move some).

I kinda agree but it's a question you ask yourself:
Do you want to be on a team stacked with high potential of winning cups but play a small role?
OR
Do you want to take a potential lesser chance at the cup but with a bigger role?

He has the talent to be one of the best 2Cs in the league. And maybe more as he hasn't even hit his prime yet.

He still plays 18-20 minutes a game with Crosby and Malkin in the line-up, gets all the big defensive match ups, top PK duties and 2nd PP duties.. Is that really a small role?

Is his head THAT big?

Why is it ridiculous though. There always seems to be this unwarranted animosity towards players getting any kind of control of their own destiny.

Sounds like Luongo to the LEafs will happen before the end of the weekend.

It just suck to lose a player at 24 before their best years.

Might as well have no draft and just let them go where they want.

Judging by what Columbus wants for Ricky Nash, Luongo will probably cost an arm and a leg...#5 pick, Gardner and Schenn or a sibstitute one of those for Khadi

It would really suck to spend the entirety of your best years were some one else told you that you had to work/live for an organization not of your choosing. These are human beings not cattle.

Luongo is a salary dump for them though, and they've got to be getting pretty desperate to move him. Schneider can be a UFA next season if they don't sign him to a long term contract. Everyone knows they're trying to get rid of Luongo, so they shouldn't expect much in return.

Yes, but he also gets weaker wingers and most of his duties are defensive. Maybe he's fed up and wants to show he can fill a good offensive role too.
Richards, Bergeron, Toews, are all great two way centers with strong offensive duties. In Pittsburgh, Staal doesn't have much of a chance of accomplishing that.

That being said, he just refused to sign a 10year extension today, that doesn't mean he won't sign one in 5months, and it might be a shorter one. We'll see.

But even if he doesn't, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to test the open market.

No one will be paying top dollar for a headcase goalie on a 10 year contract. Vancouver might get someone like Schenn but I doubt they get much more. Gardiner wont even be part of the conversation.
