Why not? For a team that has it's window closing by the day, moving a player 1 year from UFA for a guy that has established chemistry with your #1 center... it's not a bad idea. SJ is way more desperate than us, and if a comparable deal for us is:
Stepan (our #2 center, not as good as pavelski but balances out with salary/rfa status), dubinsky, our 1st (+ b level prospect to make up for difference in pick)
I don't think we are hanging up the phone.
I called BS on Howson's "4/5 major pieces" statement a week ago. This is moving into Heatley territory, which is where it belongs. Big salary, NMC, public trade demand, public negotiations, GM constantly negotiating against himself.
Considering Staal's rejection, I am content with waiting a year. I am still hoping for a Clowe type acquisition, a trade with Dallas for Ott or a trade for Ryder (or both) and a depth defensive signing. That's 'tweaking', that leaves you with options come cba settlement, mid season slumps around the league, trade deadline, and finally next july 1.
few hypotethical situations:
sather - "marc does your brother want to play here?"
marc - "No, he's going to Carolina to play with another forward"
go in fairly hard for a deal right now... radulov/nash/kane/kane/ryan/etc.
sather - "marc, does your brother want to play here?"
marc - "yes, definitely"
sign nothing more than a 1 year deal.
sather - same question
marc - "he's not sure yet."
go after radulov(if cheap) or ryan. save money. if kane wants us go in a bit on him.
sather - same question
marc - "he doesn't want me to discuss it"
trade marc

I think it's a terrible idea. But opinions are like *******s, everyone's got one.
That said, I'm not nearly as concerned right now about who is going to back up Hank in 6 years as I am about rounding the current team into top form over the next 2 to 4. IMO we can wait another year or two before burning a first rounder on a goalie. Why not spend a 3rd or 4th and see how the kid develops over the next year or two? Perhaps we won't need to use a 1st. I know Henrik Lundqvist's don't grow on trees, and amateur scouting is better than it was...but certainly there are starting goalies to be had somewhere between the 1st and 7th rounds, no?
The beat writers NEVER have a clue as to how the Rangers will draft...even when it slaps them in the face. I repeatedly mention that, even though Zippy mentioned that the Rangers had been consistently scouting Kreider leading up to the 2009 draft, he believed they'd select Carter Ashton.
And who do we take with the #2 assuming Yakupov goes first? Galchenyuk?
Assuming Yakupov goes first then Galchenyuk. If Yakupov doesn't go first, then Yakupov. God knows what Howson would want for the #2 overall pick if he wants all that for Nash, most teams would rather have the second overall pick than Nash.

In 2003 Brooks said the Rangers wanted Phaneuf, Jessiman and Getzlaf. In 2004 he wrote on the morning of the draft they wanted Montoya.

Hey.. Let's get pissed off at Howson for maintaining his position and not giving him to the Rangers for a 2nd round draft choice.? What do we accomplish, again?
My thought... How many GM's are on this board? Howson is a GM. I see nothing wrong with his negotiations as of now. He is looking for a team who is willing to pay up for Nash. He doesn't appear to be in the dump Nash mode as of now. Real negotiations start tomorrow.
Depending on the offers they can continue into free agency awaiting the movement of Parise, Ryan, etc. This isn't a negotiation solely between the Rangers and CBJ. The Rangers will make their best offer soon. They must be competitive or pass. Howson has other offers on the table. Better than the Rangers? Maybe? Howson errs if he obtains less than he would have on trade deadline day. Do I have to read the rumor wires to discover the players offered? The Rangers err if they truly want him but fail to put the best package on the table.
It seems to me that Nash is a very viable player for the Rangers. The managemnt will have to take a risk to acquire him. Does that mean overpay? Clearly not.. but overpayment is in the eyes of the beholder. The Salary is somewhat of an issue but the likelihood is that he can be had while giving up fewer assets than a Ryan for example. I like that. If not ...Pass.
Yes the Rangers can fold their hand and pass. Make a few minor changes and hope for an improvement from the kids. Maybe Hank can win back to back trophies? It buys you time. No players are traded. The downside is that it will take a number of years before you find out whether this team is Stanley cup material. Hank will be a few years older, Gabs will be on the way out, Richards ...? Maybe a new core is built? Doing little is still a risk. Risk is what life is all about.

"He is not prepared to enter into a contract extension at this time," Krepelka told ESPN.com.
All of which has obvious and major ramifications if the Penguins are unable to change Staal’s mind. The talented, two-way center has one year left on his deal with Pittsburgh at a $4-million cap hit before hitting unrestricted free agency. (The Penguins' 10-year offer is believed to be worth $60 million).
How cool would that be if we signed Jordan next summer and Jared made the Hurricanes in a year...How often (if ever) have 4 brothers played 2 on each side against each other in the same NHL game???

Isn't Jared supposed to be the most talented? That's scary.
