Eric Lindros Saga: Lindros "Trade" To Rangers

Interesting segment about the 1991 NHL Entry Draft and how he was "traded" to the Rangers.

There are 2 parts to the segment.

Part 1:

Part 2:

I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed Lindros on Broadway. I see him as a Flyer, but I certainly don't look down on his Rangers career.

The original trade to the New York Rangers that would have sent Eric Lindros to the Rangers was Lindros for Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, John Vanbiesbrouck and three first round draft picks (1993, 1994 & 1995). The deal was ruled invalid by an arbitrator who awarded Lindros to Philadelphia.

Neil Smith was negotiating with Pierre Page. I saw this earlier today. Smith said he was sick of dealing with the Lindros stuff. His bosses were more interested in Lindros than he was. TSN did not mention that but that was feeling at the time. Marcel Aubut was negotiating with the Flyers. Rick Curran was fired about the Lindros family after the trade was completed. That family was a pain in the ass. The Flyers got sick of them. Sather traded for him. The Lindros family was a pain in the ass here too.

I cannot overstate how much I LOATHE Eric Lindros and the Philadelphia Flyers. I cannot overstate the level of disgust I felt when the Rangers traded for him in 2001. Even more sickening than the way I felt when the Rangers signed Holik and even Gomez. He was easily the one player I hated more than any other as a kid, but there is no denying that if it wasn't for injuries, he would have gone down as one of the greatest players of all-time. He was an absolutely dominant physical force.

In hindsight yes.. but we had no idea that Tony Amonte and Doug Weight would turn out to be so good..

Thats why you gotta be careful with this Nash stuff.

Eric Lindros confirmed that his father, Carl, will be stepping down from his position as a partner in an accounting firm to devote all his time to managing his son's financial interests.

Lindros also left no doubt that there will be no further role for agent Rick Curran, Lindros's representative for three years, who seemed to devote the bulk of his time to Lindros's affairs.

It was Curran who most often acted as the Lindros family's spokesman during the year Lindros spent jousting with the Quebec Nordiques, the team that took him first overall in the 1991 entry draft.

Particularly considering Nash is not nearly the player Lindros was (when healthy).

The Rangers offer included $12M.

Quote:
According to a report in Journal Le Soleil in Quebec City, which accurately described the Flyers' winning bid for Lindros, the Rangers had offered John Vanbiesbrouck, Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, Aleksei Kovalev, first-round draft picks in 1993, 1994, and 1996, and $12 million. If Vanbiesbrouck was declared an unrestricted free agent, he would have been replaced in the package by James Patrick

True. Yet all those guys days were numbered on the Rangers anyway.

Even though we can't complain because they won the Cup anyway, how obvious is it that Weight and Amonte never should have been traded?

Amonte, Weight, Zubov are perfect reasons why we shouldnt break up our core young guys.

Omg all that talent just...gone.

We can all thank Larry Bertuzzi for ruling against the Rangers and in favor of the Flyers.

If that trade goes through, Rangers never win a Cup. They were giving up waaayyy too much and wouldn't be able to acquire the Larmers, Tiks, Lowes, etc. later on. Plus Lindros's medical issues would have surfaced eventually.

That trade was the foundation for the Nordiques/Avs becoming elite and winning two Cups in six years.

Getting rid of Zubov was a huge mistake. If I remember correctly it was a season or two after the Cup and I think we played Philly in the PO's and they pounded Zuby every chance they had.Ranger brass thought he couldn't hold up against physical play. They dealt him.Was that basically it in a nutshell? Can someone jog my memory?

It's disgusting all the talent the Rangers were going to throw at them. Win for us for sure.

Meant his attitude. Arrogant, self entitled whiny brat. It doesn't help that Flyers fans think he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Messier Lindros 1-2 would have won us at least one cup through the 90s imo. we eventually traded weight, amonte, kovalev anyways for 3rd liners and aging former stars. would have been better off getting a hart trophy caliber player throughout his youth and prime.

They wouldn't of had anyone to play with really. That trade goes through, you're top six are Messier, Lindros, Graves, Turcotte, Gartner, and an aging John Ogrodnick.

3rd and 4th lines would have had Nemchinov, King, Broten, and Erixon with Marchant and Zamenuer arriving later on.

Not that balanced for a playoff run. Lindros's concussion issues would have come up eventually.

Do you think Quebec won the trade because they got Peter Forsberg in return and he helped them win a Cup?
