He just doesn't command that salary. They will let him walk. This guy can't even QB a powerplay. A very key trait in an offensive defeneseman. So his value as a an offensive defenseman is automatically replaceable. Hes nowhere near the top when we are talking about defensive ability. Hes about average.
Carle if he makes it to UFA, would be one of the top options out there. Unless the Flyers are able to trade for a defenseman. They aren't going to let him walk. In fact all the information is that they already have a deal agreed to, and just waiting to announce it on July 1 due to tagging sapce issues. Carle absolutely commands the salary that is talked about for him. He's worth 5M on the open market easy. Carle is a very capable player on the PP. I wouldn't label him a PP QB. But his puck movement and playmaking, make him a solid point man on the PP. And he's a solid defender. The statement that he is automatically replaceable makes zero sense. No such thing. Just as there is no such thing as a player being made expendable.

He just doesn't have that QB ability to even command that much money. Any team who gives him 5 mil will overpay because that is how the market is for defenseman. I highly doubt the flyers resign him to that hit. He is replaceable because it isn't like this guy is a top player on the team. He is a solid player but that is it. The Flyers could grab a better option like Yandle for instance. He is very replaceable.

He would definitely command that if he hits the UFA market. He would be one of the top defenseman available. If he re-signs for the Flyers, I'd expect the hit to be a little under 5M. As Holmgren has said he's willing to sign for under market value. Is Yandle a better option? What would you have to give up to get Yandle? Wouldn't have to give up anybody to re-sign Carle. Yandle is a better goal scorer and more dynamic offensively. But as an all around player, not much different. Those that don't like Carle due to his lack of a physical game and turnovers, really won't like Yandle. And Carle is one of the top players on the team.

And a quality top 4 NHL defenseman is never very replaceable. If he was, teams wouldn't be in such need of that type of player. Another statement that is false.

Fun Fact: Luke Schenn had more turnovers last year than Carle.

Playing in Leaf-land can do that to any Dman even someone like Phaneuf. Matt Carle is 27 where Schenn is only 22 yrs old, give him time.

Homer is totally going to offer Carle 5 years at $25 million... and that'll be the starting point. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Just give all of Schenn's excess body mass to Gustafsson.

Everyone wins:

1. Schenn does not suck from being too big to skate.
2. Schenn becomes our second physical, big-bodied presence.
3. Gustafsson has enough size/muscle/mass to compete in the corners instead of being dumped.
4. We replace Carle with Gustafsson on the cheap.
5. Someone else gets to overpay for Carle.
6. We can spend that money on depth PKers that we could desperately use.

Starting point to him outbidding himself. It'll end up with something stupid like 8 years at $45 M so he can be resigned to a 35+ contract.

Matt Carle: 6' 0" 205lbs

Marc-Andre Bourdon: 6' 0" 206lbs
Erik Gustafsson: 5' 10" 180

Granted, Carle plays like he's small.

Our defense, by size:

1. Kubina - 6'4 / 258
2. Grossmann - 6'4 / 230
3. Pronger - 6'6 / 220
4. Lauridsen - 6'6 / 220
5. Coburn - 6'5 / 220
6. Walker - 6'4 / 220
7. Schenn - 6'2 / 229
8. Meszaros - 6'2 / 223
9. Lilja - 6'3 / 220
10. Kessel - 6'2 / 203
11. Bourdon - 6'0 / 206
12. Carle - 6'0 / 205
13. Manning - 6'1 / 195
14. Timonen - 5'10 / 194
15. Gustafsson - 5'10 / 180

Bourdon is the same size as Carle but plays drastically different. Gustafsson is, by far, our smallest defender. He also plays like our smallest defender, and he is quite notably the weakest player along the boards on our roster.

I'm thinking we're in for a severe overpayment, or he leaves and we need to find a last-minute replacement.

We have the money to sign Carle at this price, but we won't in a couple of years and it's gonna be a long term deal, so I'd rather not... considering Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, Voracek, will all need raises soon. We need to keep cap space, unless we overpay for 1 year deals.

At the same time, who's left in free agency, except Suter? We need Matt Carle. I hope we're gonna get a hometown discount. 4.5 would be great.
