Anyone that is a UFA willing to sign for around $1 million. Hovinen looks like he's shaping up to be the backup after this year, so whomever they get shouldn't be a long term guy and all those guys are essentially on the same level or not too far off from each other.
It's different to sign a goalie who'd actually get used, if it's short. Signing a slug like Lilja who spends half the season on the bench is a different matter.

Meh, most 7th d-men spend half the season on the bench regardless of their contract status. They are backups. That is what backups do. If he was on an ELC and was 7th dman (which would be stupid to do that with an ELC guy) he'd be on the bench. If he was 25 and was 7th dman he'd be on the bench. That is their role. To fill in when needed. I have no problem with 35+ contracts that aren't extremely long term for guys who aren't elite. Lilja on a two year 35+ isn't hurting anyone. I wouldn't mind Hedberg on a year or two deal, it's just that whenever someone mentions a 35+ guy around here the board lights up with people saying what a terrible idea it is.

It's stupid that we have Lilja for another year. It was a bad signing.
The board doesn't automatically revolt at all 35+. It depends on the situation. Many of the situations aren't good. For instance, Hedberg for two years...I don't think that would be good. I'd consider him a 1 year guy.

Haha. Why? He's the seventh defenseman and he filled that role like any other seventh defenseman would. 7th defenseman are not going to make the all star team. They aren't going to play 20 minutes a night. They are going to be used only when there are injuries and will play minimum minutes in a minimum role.

I really don't mind 35+ contracts as long as they're not for more than one year. Two years is really pushing it IMO.
