Tim Thomas Has Waived His NTC

Per Joe Haggerty of CSN

Quote:
Peter Chiarelli said Tim Thomas waived his no-trade clause allowing the Bruins to deal him prior to July 1. Sounds like he'd be ok w/trade
https://twitter.com/HackswithHaggs/s...32918400503809

No indication he's changed his stance on playing next season, but Tim Thomas has waived his NTC so the Bruins are able to deal him prior to July 1st if they so choose.

Est-ce que Tim Thomas pourrait jouer cette saison ? Il a accepté de lever sa clause de non-échange. Quelques équipes ont contacté les Bruins

Tim Thomas Waives NMC

Tim Thomas has waived NMC. Would have expired on July 1. Teams near cap floor have inquired.

Just curious, but why would any team trade for him?

If you *need* to reach the cap floor, why not acquire someone who is going to actually play?

This was expected. It will essentially be a formality when Thomas gets traded.

A team suspends him and they don't have to pay him. So they get the cap hit with out spending any real money on it.

Because Thomas doesn't really want to take a year off. He just didn't want to play second fiddle to Rask PLUS his locker room popularity is at an all time low.

I see him in Toronto this coming season.

Doesn't really matter if he's taking a year off does it?

Boston had a plan all along, wait until luongo is the only option left, then Thomas agrees to play again and gets traded to Toronto .

I believe if you trade for him and then suspend him you don't actually have to pay him the money but the salary, given his age, still counts against the cap. This way you get to the cap floor but don't actually spend any additional money

Can anyone confirm?

Update: Looks like people were already answering this question and confirming my suspicion. Carry on

He shouldn't be allowed to be traded.. If the NHL already knows that he is taking off, it's circumvention and the NHLPA probably wouldn't like him taking 5 million dollars from othejr players who could sign in NYI or such

What a goof. I'm pretty sure there's a locker room issue with him

Tim Thomas will count on the cap but the team trading for him does not have topay any money if Thomas doesn't actually play. Teams/fans won't like it but this may appeal to some owners who are losing $ paying to the cap floor.

What if he shows up?

Could be interesting. I wouldn't give up much but could see maybe the Isles doing it?

Interesting. If Thomas suddenly decides he wants to play if he's on another team then teams wanting a short term option in goal suddenly have a potential gift. I wonder who will actually be interested...

Hopefully this means he gets moved tonight. Yes, by trading for him and suspending him, a team with a cheap owner and/or internal cap can add his $5M to the cap without actually paying any real money.

@RealKyper

#SNdraft Despite Thomas waiving his no-trade allowing #Bruins to deal him he still claims it won't changed his mind on taking time off #NHL

$5 says you would call it brilliant cap management if it was Philly trying to dump Thomas.
