they should have kept calling it Versus even "Versus presented by NBC". NBC Sports Network is too damn hard to keep track of. i'd even be down with Outdoor Life

edit: this thread is moving way too fast for me:

Amen. He doesn't want to commit, then move him. It's Sid and Geno anyway. Time for Ray to exploit that.

It's NOT speculation. Yohe and Mckenzie, that I know of for sure, reported that Staal's desire to go and willingness to negotiate with Carolina was legitimate. Who do you think told them that, the tooth fairy?

If Staal is traded and people in Pittsburgh will boo him, they are stupid. Plain and simple!

We should thank him for everything he has done for us, he's been our cornerstone for years.

Remember when Sid was out? One person would report something based purely on speculation and within 24 hours it was everywhere and being accepted as fact ... and how much of that turned out to be accurate?

The speculation about Staal wanting to go to Carolina has been floating around for a while, and has never been confirmed by Staal or his agent ... has it? So isn't it possible that it's just the same rumor that's been making the rounds forever? Wasn't it Rossi who first mentioned it? Then it got picked up by other media ... and voila.

This just isn't possible. Teams will want him. GMs will believe they can sign him. Look what happened w/ Hamhuis. Even when he SAID he was going to Vancouver, Shero made a play to get him in Pittsburgh.
Plus, there's a difference between saying Staal will only talk extension and sign if traded to Carolina and saying he's willing to do that with Carolina and unwilling, in the abstract, to commit beyond that.

Yeah & now its going to be pretty hard to convince other teams to start bidding on Staal. We got screwed here pretty hard but that's alright as long as we don't offend Staal.

I kinda want him to be traded for other areas we need to address. You see what depth can do. Look at LA. we already have more than enough offense. We can always sign a few defensive specialists. If we can get a big return for staal so be it. He's expendable.

I sure as hell won't boo him. THere is no comparison to what this situation is and Jagr's little fem-drama. There's no comparison between them as men, or in terms of how this is playing out.

Yes removing Staal would help our depth & defense?

Question: What (if any) teams are interested in Staal and what are the packages that could happen?

BUT, there is a difference between being willing to negotiate with Carolina and ONLY being willing to negotiate with Carolina. The first is obvious. The second, I still doubt. Makes a lot more sense to think Staal, if traded to Buffalo, would be willing to talk if Darcy Reiger offered his agent everything he'd be asking on July 1, 2013. Yeah, no big bro, but he'd actually be on a team with brighter prospects.

Was there ever anything stated by Staal that he wants to go to Carolina?

When McKenzie first brought that up it was phrased as SPECULATION not that I'd expect people to tell the difference. Since then Yohe and Rossi have jumped on that? Well duh.

I put this on the main board yesterday, but to paraphrase.

Look at how much "rentals" go for at the deadline with only a guarantee of 2-3 months of service from that player.

Now how much would a GM be willing to give up for a "rental" with a full year of service for that player. Adding in more time to negotiate and get said player comfortable in his role and with his new team/organization.

Plus, all it takes is one GM going nuts and ponying up for what Shero wants. And it doesn't have to be the Canes.

What would make me laugh is to think that one of those four teams swoops in, lands Staal, and then breaks the bank to extend him on July 1, 2012. Staal would be pretty willing to talk then, methinks. And, to see the collective head explosion on the Canes board . . .

In all this mess, does everyone feel confident that Shero will make the best decision possible? Or do you think he will fizzle

Listening to Seidel, Starkey and Miller on the Fan. All Jordan Staal talk. Wow, I love Jordan Staal but these guys place him at a super high level.

Seidel says Staal is working on a Hall of Fame career.

Starkey says that Staal was smart to turn down 6mill per, that he can get easily 8-9mill from another team. He says Staal has 40, 50 goal potential.

We know that they called, and man I sure hope that somebody steps up to the plate. But I'm not expecting a great return at this point, on account of Staal sabotaging his own trade value, as per the above explanation.

Hall of Fame career? Oh boy. That is quite the statement. Staal is terrific, but nowhere near that.
