So if some team near the cap floor trades for him I would expect that that team should be relocated immediately.

At the very least, the fans shouldn't show up.

How can the NHL and its fans approve of such a blatant attempt to not be competative

Could see Chicago making an offer...

There is a "Stalberg to eastern conf team" rumor...

Would make pretty good sense for both teams.

Bruins trade Thomas to the NY Islanders for a 7th round pick in 2014,, Bruins acquire rights to Zach Parise for 2012 2nd round pick.

The precedent has already been set with the Malakov trade. It would be a reversal of precedent to start punishing for it now.

Then again, the NHL reversed precedent on the Kovalchuk deal...

No indication he's changed his stance on playing next season, but Tim Thomas has waived his NTC so the Bruins are able to deal him prior to July 1st if they so choose.
Please don't let Chiarelli get near Burkie.

Winning a Conn Smythe and ending a 39 year Cup drought buys a lot of patience from this Bruins fan. Plus I still figure there's more to the story than is being let on.

I actually thought he was a good guy when he said he wanted to spend time with family, friends and pursue other goals he had in life, but now this is just getting annoying.

Feel bad for BB fans.
Feel bad for Chia.
Feel bad for NHL.

Tim Thomas, please go.

He'll get traded for a 7th, sit out into the regular season and then decide to come back so he can prove himself and get another contract. At that point, he'll get traded from the team that just wanted the cap hold and to a contender than wants a goalie.

After all the crapslinging in the Luongo thread, that would actually be kinda funny.

Not sure if you're serious with that TT avatar.

But then this guy makes me think (some) B's fans actually are starting to really dislike him.

I suppose two Vezinas and a Conn Smythe only earn you so much patience. I've always enjoyed his style of play, but never really enjoyed his personality or attitude. Not sorry he wont be playing next season.

I don't think this sort of deal should be allowed though. He's already expressed his desire to not play next season, so this seems like pretty clear cap circumvention to me were a team to acquire him for purposes of reaching the cap floor.

Posted this in the Bruins forum but if anyone has any thoughts on it here then go for it. :-)

What are the chances the NHL vetoes a Tim Thomas trade to a cap floor team based on an attempt to circumvent the cap. Trading for a player you know is not going to play and whom you would not have to pay just so you can get his cap number on your books seems like cap circumvention to me.

Is there any precedent for this???

The NHL did not reverse anything with Kovy's deal, it set precedent re: cap circumvention. That other teams had been allowed to get away with it before is unfortunate, but the league had to take a stand somewhere. I really hope they address this more in the new CBA. As for Thomas, the league should take a CLOSE look at any deal, and if he doesn't play, both teams should be levied with penalties.

I think there's more to the story on both sides. Which is sad; I hope he's not remembered for his exit but more for what he did while he was here.

Sad day. Knew it was a matter of time but it still stings. Thank you Timmy!

Not sure where he goes but I trust my GM.

But they don't care that Boston will spend $5 million less on players?

Sounds like they would need to talk to Thomas about that.

Honestly, it's like he's been out of the media for 2 weeks so he had to do something to get back in it.

What? He waived his NMC early so the Bruins could trade him tonight. Teams have inquired, so there's a chance.

Kinda surprised by the hate from B's fans. Sucks that he isn't honoring his contract through its duration but I appreciate all he has done for the team.

Exactly what I have been saying all along. The team getting him now doesn't care if he doesn't play for them because they can absorb the cap hit. And if a contender has an injury near the deadline Thomas' value goes up quite a bit higher than the 7th it will probably take to get him now.

Trade a 7th for him now, maybe get a 3rd or 4th or prospect for him at the deadline.

I'm sure he knows it wouldn't make a difference since his NTC is gone on July 1 anyway. I guess this will help prevent people from complaining that he doesn't care about Boston anymore...
