A Habs win, and Atlanta loss clinches

Or so I think I heard on RDS last night. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. Go Habs go!

A win brings us to 91pts, Atl has 81pts with 6 games left. I was under the impression clinching meant it was 100%, Atl could win all 6 games they have left and finish with 93, and we could lose all of our games

If Atlanta loses tonight, they only have 5 games left.

If that happens, Montreal will have 91 points with Atlanta only being able to achieve a maximum of 91. But, if it's based on wins for the tie breaker, it still is possible for Atlanta to capture more wins if we lose and they win our/their last 5 games.

Anyone in the house know if it's wins for the breaker?

If it is, Montreal won't "officially" clinch tonight even if they win and Atlanta loses.

RDS has been saying this since the Ottawa game, but from what I can see, it's wrong.

Habs win, they have 91 pts, 5 games left. Atlanta loses, 81 pts, 5 games left. If Habs lose all their games and Atlanta wins all their's, then Atlanta has 91 pts.

1st tie-breaker is wins, Habs currently have 40 and would have 41 if they went 1-5-0. Atlanta has 37, and thus would have 42 if they went 5-1-0, and so they would take the tie-breaker.

If we win 2 and they lose 1 - that's it!

Well, I probably should've looked at the standings more carefully.. not just points + games remaining. Oh well. Close this, I guess.

BTW, last time the Habs clinched, was it against Ottawa with that insane last minute tip-in by Steve Begin?

It against Boston, no? We needed one point to clinch. The game went into overtime, and as soon as the third period buzzer sounded, Quintal started to celebrate. He then realized no one else was, so he stopped. I think we lost that game, but it didn't matter. Though maybe this wasn't last season.

no it was against boston with 3 games left, we lost in OT but we still got a point to clinch, we clinched vs ottawa in 2002 when koivu returned.

Ah yes. My memory was failing me, but I seem to remember the strange feeling of celebrating an OT loss.

At least you're a classy troll differently to Toronto's and Bruins' troll.

I'm going to the Ottawa game on Monday. It occured to me yesterday it might be the game the Habs clinch, if the stars align right!

I remember. We had clinched with the 1 point awarded for getting into OT. Quintal came over to Theo all happy and Theo gave him a gesture pointing to the scoreclock which I interpretted as Theo saying, "There's still 5 minutes to play & we still have a game to win Q".

No worries.. y'all (I've always wanted to type that) can still catch Tampa Bay and take 8th spot from them! They're two points back of us so... yeah, it's still possible.

While watching the game with my friend, I remember saying "it'd be awesome if they all started to celebrate if the game goes into overtime." Sure enough, Quintal did and I couldn't stop laughing for a minute or two.
