I don't see the Pens moving Orpik (or Michalek to a lesser extent) for anything that doesn't make them better immediately.

So, I don't see either of them being moved, unless it's part of something bigger. Orpik is the only player in the system who plays that style of D.

It's sad but the biggest thing I remember about his play this past year was him whining and arguing with a ref everytime he got a penalty.
I'm glad others are finally seeing the light. I've felt this way since we won the cup. Since that finals series that we beat Detroit, Orpik has regressed horribly.

First, it was his mental state (going for a hit over a smart defensive play)
Last year, it was his skating (he's lost that quick step and balance)
This year, he wasn't as physical as he used to be.

I'm all for trading Orpik. His physical presence doesn't exist anymore.

Yeah Rob Rossi is a **** stain on the underpants of society.

Don't take a word he says with any sort of importance.

Glad this is just Rossi, otherwise I'd be real disappointed. All our D sucked this year, I wouldn't single brooksie out.

Trading their cap hits without getting salary back makes the team better immediately...better able to compete for contracts on July 1, better for the re-signing efforts of our own, better for introducing some of the kids on D.

Both Engelland and Bortuzzo play that style, too. And the team is grooming Samuelsson, too.

Orpik is a shell of what he used to be. This is a great time to deal him.

He basically had no offseason due to surgery. I'd at least give him another season.

Can't do Grabner. He'd flourish with Crosby or Malkin and we'd be looking dumb. If you guys are thinking of moving Staal, we have a young center (Casey Cizikas) who has the same defensive pedigree as him and can contribute right away. Cizikas + 2nd?

We aren't giving up Clowe so that we could pay a defenseman over $3M to play on our third pairing...

That's a once in a while moment. That used to be all the time for him.

Brooks isn't being singled out, however.

I'd much rather do the deal from the Ducks. Its what we need more giving up a top prospect in Palmieri to play beside Crosby. He could become a Neal in a few years if he gets time with Crosby.

Palmieri + 2nd for Orpik. Deal. Get on this Murray and Shero.

I forgot he's a veteran. 2012-13 Season Ticket to the Dan Bylsma Country Club - complete with unlimited playing time for all 82 games + playoffs.

I just don't see the point, we're not going to get a better return for him. He's one of our best defenseman, it would be stupid to trade Brooks Orpik, I don't care what other Pens fans say.

Pittsburgh can't afford to get worse defensively (if that is possible).

He can play in a 2nd or 1st pairing that's actually offensive.

Take notice to how it was phrased.

I didn't say Orpik would be playing on the 3rd pairing...

I don't have a problem with them moving Orpik. I thought his play started a gradual decline in the 2010-11 season and last year was his worst since his early years. At least one of the Martin/Michalek/Orpik trio should be moved this off-season and if Shero can a good deal he should swing it. Orpik is a solid second-pairing d-man at this point and has nice value due to a decent contract.

I don't understand the uproar among Pens fans concerning the team's defense/goaltending situation when potential subtractions are brought up. It's always "Orpik is super physical and Shero cannot dare to move him", "Martin just have an off year and would be great in another system, he's not just a cap dump", "Z just had a bad year, etc," "Fleury needs better defense in front of him" and so on and so forth. This defensive core and goalie just had one of the worst playoff series of all time, there should be no untouchables on d besides Letang. The coaching staff can't be blamed for all of the mistakes.

How far past 30 is Brooks? What about Foligno from Ott for him?

Brooks Orpik is 31, and Ottawa probably wants Zbynek before Brooks Orpik.

Next year is his age 32 season, 3.75 cap hit for next two seasons. A very reasonable contract.
