Staal needs to be signed to an extension from a Ducks POV. IIRC, weren't Pens fans very against the trading of Despres?

we are, ideally we're moving a few dmen to make space for Despres on the NHL roster next year.

If Staal is signed to an extension, then the difference in value between Staal and Ryan isn't Despres.

Never said it was. I was simply pointing out that this deal seems like a no go for both teams.

If Staal isn't signed to an extension his value is a 2nd at most.
Especially due to the rumors of him not signing anywhere he is traded (other than possibly Carolina)

What does Montreal have to do with anything in this thread?

Pens won't give up Despres. He's going to be a full time regular for Pittsburgh this season, and outside of Letang, he's probably the least likely defenseman to be moved (if we are to believe that Shero is trying to move a defenseman or two)

LOLOLOL. I totally get how him not being signed is a problem for a team like Anaheim and I did not make this proposal, but you cannot be serious about the value of 2 month of Gaustad > 1 year of Staal bit.

Remind me again what the Sabres got for Gaustad for only 1/4 of the season and the playoffs.

Players not as good as Staal get more than that at the trade deadline. The team would have a full season of him playing.

Staal for Ryan is fair, no need to add Despres who is a steal at 30.

It might be because I'm tired after a long day of work and very little sleep, but I started bursting laughing at this.
I personally wouldn't take this trade from an Anaheim perspective.

At least Gaustad had a reasonable chance to be re-signed. Staal not so much. Go find another sucker.

No its not. Even if Staal was singed for the same contract as Bobby i would never do straight up.

Nah. Staal isn't going to accept less money to play in Anaheim.

Fair enough...FWIW, a Staal trade probably needs a conditional pick in it.

Staal is aiming for 7 mil and will likely sign at about 6.5

Which is why the only way he'll ever end up a Duck is if we're trading Getzlaf.
