I assume this offer is for Montreal to pick up the phone.

Then you have to negotiate the value for Subban

Yep. Montreal would be ill-advised to trade Subban for any draft pick straight up. Draft picks have considerable risk, even first-overalls. Subban is a #1 D-man in the league right now at age 23. Even if Montreal were to undertake a rebuild, D-men take longer to develop than forwards and it would take several years for a D they draft later to develop while the forwards would be ready sooner, making it hard for the windows to line up -- a problem Edmonton is now facing.

And yes, he is a #1. He is deployed in that role (and gets significantly more starts in the Dzone than in the Ozone, too) and his underliers are strong, and this has been going on for two years and last year he was carrying Hal freaking Gill while he was doing it. People go on and on about his offensive flashiness and his off-ice behavior, but perhaps ironically, what really makes Subban so valuable is his defense and his ability to move the puck under pressure.

The "high ranking member" doesn;t know because Subban is quietly being shopped. If every Claude, Maurice and Pierre in the org knew what was happening, it wouldn't be quietly shopping

Agreed if the hawks are trading for Subban it's for Leddy, Kane and Toews and even then it's highway robbery for the hawks. Stupid bandwagonners.

After 13/14, the "big" contracts end (Markov, Gionta, Kaberle & Gomez). IF (and I don't hope they do) they trade Subban, they should trade him to EDM for their 1st overall to get Galchenyuk + Yakupov. We got Beaulieu and Tinordi up and coming, who should start getting time in the big league this season (at least some games) and maybe play full season in 13/14, so they can start adapting to the NHL.

In 14/15, Gally and Yakupov are on their last year ELC and the following season should be the first season when this should pay off.

Pk for the 1st, not PK + the 3rd for the 1st. Why on earth would MTL give arguably their best defender to move up 2 spots?

And Montreal would hang up and tell Edmonton never to call them again.

No kidding, but no way Montreal does that. Difference between Yakupov and Galchenyuk is not a 50 point dman!

I thought Subban was untouchable; he seems too much of a fan favourite. I don't see him as really being shopped; in my opinion.

All I gotta say is, when you have Bruin fans, Sabre fans and other fans telling you that that offer is crap for Montreal, you know your offer is crap.

I wrote it thinking he will be a 50 point dman. 2 years in the league and has shown he has 15 goal, 35 assist potential...and I'm a Bruins fan.

Grant McCagg (he's the credible one, not Kyper, given McCagg's connections with the CH) shoot this rumor down.

Teams would have to overpay to get Subban. Great D are rare and the guy plays on the PK, PP, has offensive and defensive skills, he is gritty and he's the Habs' number #1 D at this point in time. And he has something that cannot be overlooked when you play in Montreal- showmanship!

Aside from showmanship, he certainly doesn't seem to mind the spotlight, which is huge for a team like Montreal.
