Wtf Joe... I'm not Ribs biggest fan and think we needed to move on, but we seriously couldn't get better?
I'm guessing Joe didn't want to trade him to anyone in the West.

I'll be OK with this move if Morrow is gone too. If Riberio is the only "leadership core" shakeup Joe was talking about though...

They don't have to sign one of those guys to see some real benefit out of this trade.
Just look at the list of UFA's that aren't in the elite class and tell me which one you want. Because right now Dallas can be in a conversation with any guy in the league. And signing one or two of those guys that maybe were stuck in a depth role or could use a change of scenery or are ready to break out will more than make up for Ribeiro's departure and that's not even counting the draft pick and great new prospect we have.
You have to think critically about this stuff if you're going to blast the guy. Because there are any number of things Dallas could do with that cap space and money.

Same here.
When Gagliardi was talking about possibly shaking up the veteran core, I hope he had more plans than just trading the best veteran on the team.....

Meh, he doesn't really count since it was his first year here. Ribs was by far the best of the older guys.

I took "veteran" to mean a long-time player for us. As the others have mentioned, Ryder doesn't qualify.
Please have more tricks up your sleeve, Nieuwy. Not too much to ask, is it?

ok so if the trade was say Mike Ribeiro for a 2nd line player, a depth forward, Cody Eakin, and a 2nd round pick would we like it?
because that's probably what you're getting.

As long as we make a good pick, this trade will be redeemed IMO.
I know they're unrelated, btw.

I think you missed the point. The point about how if you don't spend your money on one thing, you can take the money and spend it on something else.

Now you know why Wandell wasn't qualified. They just traded for his replacement.

I wouldn't mind except Ribeiro's jersey is the only Dallas jersey left that fits me and now I can't wear it as proudly.

we did last year but ok I'll take your word for it. But you do recognize that there is potential for Dallas to add a significant piece to the roster with $5 million dollar right? and that if we're going to be fair in analysing this trade we have to recognize that?

I was all for dealing Ribeiro, but Eakin is Steve Ott at best. Not enough, unless they can package those picks for NHL talent.

I'm not surprised that they traded Ribeiro, but I am a little surprised at the lack of return. Moving Ribeiro creates a huge hole at center. The only UFA who could be called a second line center is Olli Jokinen. If you can't sign Jokinen there's not really anyone in the free agent market who can the second line. If you plan on acquiring a center through a trade, it would be nice to have a higher draft from Washington to use as trade bait.

We were nowhere near the cap ceiling before this deal was made.
Now we're even further from the ceiling.
We've gone from having a lot of cap space to having tons of it.

Or maybe this really means Ribeiro had next to no value around the league.

yeah so we won't get up to 70 million or whatever the cap will be.
Now instead of having X amount of dollars to spend in free agency, we will have X+5,000,000
how come nobody else is seeing this?!?!?
