Mikhail Grigorenko, Center 12th Overall, 2012

Aaron Vickers (Future Considerations)

"Grigorenko is a player with high-end potential. He has some of the best puck-handling skills in the entire draft and his vision is elite.
He dissects the play better than everyone else in the Q this year. He controls the game very well and is a lethal playmaker on the
powerplay. He has a strong release on an NHL quality shot and often finds open space in the offensive zone. His mobility is above
average, with a strong top speed and quick fluid feet, but his acceleration could use some improvement. His vision on the ice is
extraordinary, possibly his best asset; he can make plays that few NHLers can. He seems to see the offensive plays develop a step or
two before everyone else and is able to find the open player through heavy traffic or even from behind his back with a perfectly timed
pass. His puck protection is very good and it isn’t easy to steal the puck away from him because of his long reach. He does not shy
away from using his body to protect the puck while maintaining possession in the offensive zone. A lot of his play seems natural and
effortless."

Bill Placzek (Draft Site)

"Tremendous talent who also has left Russia to cement the notion that he would be willing to stick around and be signed and assigned
to development in North America. Shows signs that he is an emerging dominant player based on his size, balanced skating, speed,
power, and puck-handling ability. He is a player who gets the attention of the opposition as they focus on preventing him from getting
chances. He moves effortlessly as he goes on the attack. He sees the ice well and generates chances while making room for his
linemates. His all-around game and focus are a work in progress, as he can tend to focus only on the offensive side, forgeting the other
things that are necessary. He also has be accused of notching down when games are out of reach. He led all first-year players in the
league with 85 points and 40 goals, and was second in assists with 45. Not easy to move off the puck, he projects as another high level
Russian import who can make an impact in the NHL either on wing or center. He was accused of again disappearing in the World
Under-18, and afterward it was announced he was diagnosed with mononucleosis. An interesting parallel is in the 2007 draft, when
Logan Couture was still on the board at slot nine, due to the fact he had a lackluster draft year after getting mono and never truly
recovered for the entire season. The difference is Couture was never considered an on-ice Jeckyll-Hyde player. No one will argue with
the fact that if this young man commits, his upside is huge."

Corey Pronman (Hockey Prospectus)

"Grigorenko is a very special kind of talent who scouts have been hearing about for many years. He absolutely burst onto the scene
last year with a tremendous performance at the Under-18s. He’s an exceptionally gifted player who can control the flow of a hockey
game seemingly at will with elite puck skills, vision, offensive creativity, and overall hockey sense. He makes high level dekes seem
effortless and is the kind of player who is able to slow the game down to his pace rather than try to keep up with it. His ability as a
playmaker is really special as he is the classic “eyes in the back of his head” type of player who consistently makes high-level reads
quickly and effectively…he’s the kind of talent who NHL sources have described as the best guy on the ice while he’s going at 75%."

Craig Button (TSN)

"Mikhail possesses a unique blend of skill and size. He's an excellent skater with a long stride who seemingly just moves past defenders
with ease. He carries the puck very well and because he can change gears in stride, it makes him very difficult to deter. A very good
passer who makes plays on the move and is able to do it in traffic. He has good sense and vision and sees the potential for offensive
opportunities and he creates chances. His shot is good but not threatening at this time but he shows a willingness to make this more of
a weapon for himself. Because of his size and wing span, he is extremely effective defensively and he's able to force opponents away
from dangerous areas and he is also able to fend off checkers when he's in offensive situations. He plays the game both ways and while
he's not a physical presence, he is a player who creates challenges for opponents because of the skill and his size which he knows how
to utilize to gain advantages. He possesses qualities and a potential that realized could make him a star."

David Burstyn (McKeen's Hockey)

"Grigorenko enjoyed a fine season, as he was the highest scoring rookie, showcasing his vastly superior offensive skill set. He also won
a silver medal a the WJC, but his play and contributions were limited and did not help his overall draft stock. Grigorenko is a big player
with underrated strength and can be difficult to move once he gets a head of steam. What separates him from other prospects is his
ability to make sensational passes while looking off. He can gain additional real estate in the offensive zone due to his uncanny
stickhandling ability, as his one-on-one moves and imagination with the puck are NHL-calibre already."

David Gregory (Central Scouting)

"He's the type of player that controls the whole pace of the game, he can play with the puck at the same pace he plays without the
puck," Central Scouting's David Gregory said. "He sees the ice and opportunities really well. He can hang onto it longer than most
players; some players might feel that they have to move it quickly. But Mikhail has the patience and the ability to see opportunities and
let them develop, which is a special skill. He's got a big long reach and an ability to move in traffic with his size (6-foot-3.25, 200). He's
the kind of forward who will control the play and make things happen."

Grant McCagg (TSN)

"Highly regarded winger burst onto the international scene with ten points in six games as a 15-year-old at the U-17's in 2009 and
followed up with a staggering 18 points in seven games at last spring's U-18 championship. Strengths: Possesses the size, strength
and skill teams covet in a first-line centre, protects the puck well and has great hands for a big man. Also has a smooth, powerful stride
and drives to the net with force. Has a heavy shot, great vision and passing skills, elite offensive talent. Not afraid to get his nose dirty
when so inclined. Weaknesses: Has to continue working on his all-around game, needs to bring more consistency, will take some shifts
and games off. NHL upside: Has been compared to Viktor Kozlov in terms of his size/skill package, but also because of his inconsistency.
Has the capability of being a skilled number one center at the NHL level, but will he have the desire?"

Aside from the top two picks I think he had the best chance.

This is a great pick. I know he's Russian and he's already got lazy label, but he's good.

The value of Grigorenko at #12 is unreal. I said in the irc chat that this was the best high-end center the Sabres have drafted since Turgeon and no one corrected me. It's that big.

SO PUMPED.

We wanted to tank for this guy a while back. He falls to us. We got to clear up any off ice issues but the talent and size is something we've needed for years.

WELCOME TO THE BUFFALO SABRES MIKHAIL GRIGORENKO

He is close to NHL ready according to many NHL scouts.

So very excited to have a kid with his size and skill in the fold. Also looking forward to what he can do when he's not playing on messed up ankle(s) or with mono.

Agreed. There is too much at stake at the various international tournies for it to be a fake. It smacks of a rumor spread to help him fall. Someone spread mis-information to make it easier to land him later.

It's Russia. Lot of fake stuff but there is prejudice towards these kids from Don Cherry types. Bottom line is it's worth gamble.

This is an amazing pick. After years of not picking Ngata and Orakpo (for the Bills) and not trading up for top end talent... to pick Grigorenko and Girgensons in the top 15 is incredible. My wife kept asking me "Why are you yelling", well I finally have a good reason. Great job Darcy and Terry.

I'm just still in disbelief. Grigorenko is ours. I expect him to compete for a spot in camp and preseason and he might make the team or at the very least earn the 7-game look.

His comparable is Jason Spezza. I'm so psyched that we got him. Beyond ecstatic.

Fantastic for the Sabres. Combined with Grigensons that's a major upgrade at the center position.

That's exactly what I was saying all morning with 0 expectation that Buffalo would get him. I thought he'd fall to 9-10 and some respected franchise would make the move to get him. I'm beyond thrilled.
