Just for reference...

Vanek-Hogdson-Pominville
Roy-Galchenyuk-Nash
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford

That doesn't seem like a bad top 9 to me.

You don't consider 3 picks for Bobrovsky a massive overpayment?

Well, it's my opinion so it can't be false. I'm pretty sure if the Sabres were to waive Leino, no team would pick him at the full cap hit. It cost Calgary a 2nd to get rid of Kotalik's 3M hit for one year. I can't imagine a team wanting to roll the dice on Leino turning it around with a 4.5 hit and 21 million in real money still on the books for 5 more years. The guy is almost 30.

Yeah, teams that are worried about the floor aren't about to take on $21 million of real salary over the next 5 years on a 25 point FA bust. Christ.

not when i see what Lindback and Varlamov were traded for recently.

regardless... a massive overpayment is not the same as "giving up the farm". Maybe I just misread your hyperbole.
Did they give up the 2nd or 32nd picks?
Did they give up Johansen?
Dig they give up Moore?
Jenner, Golobuf, Savard, Weber, etc

I mean.. they give up one solid pick and two 4ths... really not that big of a deal.

The Sabres gave up TWO 2nd rounders to rent Moore and Torres....
just sayin...

But you're missing the point.

Bottom tier teams WANT players with salary below cap. Teams are calling about Tim Thomas to take his cap hit this year, and he's not even going to PLAY.

Leino is not a player at the end of his career hanging on like Kotalik was. He's a 28 year old forward who has produced in the past coming off a down year with a contract that's fairly cap friendly. There are teams that would take that.

true. they could just sign someone for 4.5 million for ONE YEAR if they are that desperate to reach the floor.

.
Learn values my friend. Leino is owed 6 million this season and then 4 million the next 2. Even his last 2 seasons of the contract He makes 3.5 a season, even at 3.5 no one is paying him for 25 point production. Not to mention not one competitive franchise would ever entertain the thought of 4.5 mil in cap space for Ville Leino. Your banking on a sad team needing to get to the cap floor, yet even then he wouldn't be desirable.

For a team that's in a rebuilding mode, as Columbus is in, they need to be using those high picks on good prospects, or trading them for immediate impact players. Bobrovsky isn't an immediate impact player.

so, someone is going to trade for 2 yrs of Wade Redden any day now? you know, so they can reach the cap floor.

Wade Redden is 35 year old defensemen who wasn't all that good to begin with.

Villie Leino is 28 year old forward with ONE really subpar season.

Bobrovsky has won in the NHL, won in the playoffs.
Those picks have between a 10-20% chance of ever even sniffing an NHL game.

Bobrovsky is a nice, young goaltender... with experience and wins. 2nd, 4th, 4th ? who cares... Columbus had like 12 picks, and NO goaltenders

And maybe he'll turn it around and his value will rise. I'm not particularly worried about Leino. I think he'll find his role here, but he has negative trade value right now. He's going to be 29 years old coming and off a horrible season. His contract is not cap friendly no matter how badly Beechsack wants to pretend it is because it never drops below 3.5M real salary or deviates more than 1M from the cap hit. If a team is worried about the floor, they can do better and aren't going to want to take on a $21M albatross. Teams *may* want Thomas because he's going to cost nothing.

As of today, I don't see how anyone could think Ville Leino has positive trade value.

Exactly. A team with no money going to take a huge contract because the real hit at its lowest point is a million below the cap hit? For five years? Sometimes I wonder...

And also ONE slightly above average one. In 09-10 he scores 11 points in 55 games then has a hot playoffs. Then he had his 53 point year with a mediocre postseason (only notable thing was game 6 OT goal)

He got paid off a fluke post season and a good but not great season getting to play with Danny Briere. Last season was a complete bust for him.

Yeah, but they don't have to pay any actual money for Thomas...there's the difference.
