I think he can become a second line center.

Is it possible the Sabres push him towards Kelowna or the AHL if they feel its better for his development than going to Vermont? Or is that something thats frowned upon?

I have no idea what route would be best for him. I'm just wondering how much influence the team that drafted him has on these decisions.

Girgensons gets the final say, and he WON'T go to Kelowna. I think the Sabres might prefer him there, but it won't happen.

Is that something he's already stated?

Yes.

Basically he felt Kelowna disrespected him with the comments they made about guaranteeing he would be there after the WJC without even speaking to him, and the way the spoke to him and stuff.

If he does go to the CHL, it won't be to Kelowna, they will have to trade his rights.

He said that while he was a member of Dubuque, though.

“The fans of Buffalo will love this guy,” Kevin Devine, the Sabres’ director of amateur scouting, said in Consol Energy Center. “He just will not quit. We talked to his coach, and his coach said he’s got the leadership qualities of Jonathan Toews, Mark Messier.”

Quote is from the Buffalo News article (link posted above).

If he has half the leadership skills of Mess, I'll do cartwheels down Pearl Street until I land in the canal.

He if he can turn into that...what a beast. Of course, he's probably most remembered for that ludicrous 9M deal the Rangers signed him to.

Holik...my god, if he became Holik I would do so many happy dances it's not even funny. I always traded for Holik back in those old NHL games...not that one needed a defensive center in those games..at all...but yeah.

Holik smash! He put up 60 points several times too while playing that defensive, eat up the ice kind of role. That's a great comparison Buffaloed provided to think about. That's a rare combo of size and skill, so if pans out into half that, this team will be in good shape.

Is Girgensons fluent in Russian? I would imagine that if he can speak it fairly well, then that would really help out Grigorenko having someone to connect/talk with while at the rookie camp and other times moving forward.

Kaleta would go into ultimate troll mode knowing he has Foligno and Girgs on his line.

You mean older generations...

Hopefully the kid will live up to expectations. First and foremost for his own sake. I wish him all the best!

Just spoke with my scouting friend. Asked him if he thought Girgensons could make the team this year. He said he truly believes both he and Grigorenko have a legitimate chance of making the team this year and have dimensions that make the team better all around. So don't write him off the squad, sounds like they are going to give him a chance to step right in if he can do it. Not that anyone cares, but the guy I talked to was on stage for the pick, so he's not just some intern or anything like that.

Regier said something similar. Something along the lines of... he'll be here sooner than you think.

The problem with Girgensons trying to make the team this year is that if he signs a contract, he forfeits his NCAA eligibility...and with him not wanting to go to Kelowna, that leaves only the AHL which going from the USHL is such a huge jump (and the NHL is even bigger jump). Even if he could, I'd at least want to let him play 1 year in Vermont before pushing the issue...I don't think the risks are worth it.

It's clear that he feels very disrespected by comments Kelowana's GM made about him and I don't blame him; the remarks were very presumptive and a bit condescending. Of course that doesn't mean he can't warm up to the idea but it's probably more likely that he would go AHL than WHL, however he and his family seem to value the education and the bond of word associated with his commitment to Vermont.

The more I'm reading about Zemgus the more I love the guy.

He seems like a straight arrow dude, if he sees something he wants he is relentless in his pursuit of it. He knows what he wants to do and he knows what he has to do to achieve it. I have high expectations of this guy.
