Suter has gotten everything he wanted. He said all that stuff so that Poile wouldn't trade him and he could get one more chance to win here in Nashville, which he pretty much pissed away, with that abysmal effort in Phx.
The press conference has already been written. He's already got it written. Get ready, as soon as he signs with ____, "I always liked Nashville. They were the team that drafted me. I had hoped something would get worked out. In the end, this was just better for my family."
The classic "family", statement, you know, the one that you're not supposed to be able to refute. The only question in this whole drama anymore is whether he lobs a pot shot at the Nashville fans like Hamhuis did.
Frk sounds exciting, but man, with the amount of hype he's getting I'd be scared to draft him. The super-hyped fallers almost always bust. Frk could be an exception though.

In a draft this shallow I think taking a risk on the faller is the best way to go. There won't be any guarantees in the 2nd round this year, that's for sure.

I agree with the original post. Shero is such much more proactive as a GM-- and the right kind of proactive. He gave Staal his best offer. He refused; he traded him while he still has a ton a value knowing that he was likely going to lose him for nothing in a year. Got a ton in return which will ensure Pittsburgh stays a contender for even longer.
Not a great return for Michalek, but he's obviously clearing space. He got Michalek for free anyway.
Two good defenseman traded today in Michalek & Vish. Cost way less than what we pay for for short term rentals.
Riberio would have also been the best center to ever play for us (sans injured Forsberg).

I agree with most of your post. But if you are suggesting we should have traded Weber or Suter last offseason then I highly disagree, and most other people do too (not just Preds fans). Making your team considerably weaker before a Cup run, just because you are scared he will walk away, is absolutely the wrong move. The goal of hockey is to win games, not maximize assets.
Pittsburgh is just as good without Staal. They could afford to move him. If we had an immediate replacement for Suter, then sure trade him.
Also, Ribeiro only has 1 year left on his contract. By your logic, we shouldn't have any players in contract years because they might walk for nothing. Why do you want Ribs and not Suter?
doubtful. division rivals is one thing.. but teams traded within conferences happen all the time. highly doubt that was a condition.
But if there is realignment anytime soon we may very well be division rivals. And as was said, ribs only has one year left. I would have traded assets for him at the deadline last season because that effectively gets him for two years but I would not give a lot for having him for one year only. That is basically a rental.

That is not the case. We would have made the playoffs regardless, and whatever asset(s) we would have gotten in return for Suter would have been there to help us not only during the playoff run, but also in the years to come.
And this whole "Cup run" you speak of wasn't as much of a "Cup run". Getting smoked in 5 games by a Phx team that got smoked in the next round isn't really that close. I'm just not that interested in mortgaging our future by letting Suter walk just so we can get trucked in Conference Semi's.

So why didn't NJ trade Parise since he might be walking too? What about LA and Penner? How about any team that made the playoffs who had impending UFA's? You don't trade your best players at the trade deadline if you have a decent shot in the playoffs. The Preds had a very good shot this year, they fell short.
People talk about Poile and taking chances. When he does take a chance, by trying to maximize a player like Suter, people complain in hindsight that we should've gotten something for him. Easy to say. What if we went one round further, would there still be these same complaints? If Poile trades Suter, people complain because he didn't have faith in the team he built.
Shero is successful because he has the luxury of having the two best players in the world playing for him. Team that with an owner who has championships and a bank account to afford a roster to the cap and it's a great situation for him. If we had owners who had deep pockets AND the thirst to win like Lemieux and his partners then we'd see different results. Until the owners actually spend to the cap I don't blame Poile for being fiscally AND asset responsible(short and long term). He has to be or this team isn't very good.

Trading possibly your best player in the year that you have probably your best shot at a Cup is absolutely the wrong move. You roll the dice, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
