I don't know how the picks will turn out. But you can build strength and work on being aggressive. You can't teach skill. Looks like they are looking to get guys who have the skill set but can develop the physical aspect too...
Ha, It should be noted I posted that before the pick was made !!!!
Not just a blind Holland hater.
I'm a knights fan and I ve seen him for two years now. Athanasiou will never make it out of London!! He needs to be traded this offseason and even then he needs to wake TFU! and find a hockey IQ and a pair of balls.
The Hunter brothers hate him (and with good reason) and healthy scratched him during most of the OHL playoffs.
On the plus side, he is probably the best skater in the draft. However he has no clue how to use his speed...
Thanks for providing some insight. Could be Landon Ferraro 2.0. I like having a guy with his size, speed and skill. Hopefully he can get his head on straight.

Seems to work like clockwork, everyone hates the Red Wings draft at the time and then after the fact it starts to gain some respect. I don't bag on guys at all until we really have a good handle on their development. Or lack of development in some cases.
If Paterson was Osgood's pick, then Athanasiou was probably all Chelios because he's Greek, amirite?
Maybe. I just think that with Osgood being a local guy and Paterson being a local guy and with a bunch of goalies going waaaaayyy early maybe Holland put Osgood in the drivers seat at 80 and said pick the guy who you like most? Just extrapolating.

i don't know. the last years i liked the wings draft a lot. i saw what they saw when they picked the players. i felt good with the projects and gambles.
this year...i really don't get that feeling. frk might fit their usual mold of tatar/jurco/tvrdon...
but the other two picks...oh well...
maybe the next picks will bring that feeling back.
I notice Dane Fox is still available.
He is a gritty two way forward, not afraid to drop the gloves and will probably put up good numbers this year in Erie. Good Skater, decent size, and well he can score, he projects to be a shutdown type gritty third line forward.

I just don't know what the plan was supposed to be with the way this draft has gone.
Nill said they wanted to get bigger because it's a big man's game now. Well, they've taken a couple of skilled forwards who aren't small, but who aren't going to knock Dustin Penner off the puck.
It's not so much a big man's game now as a tireless worker's game. And they've taken two guys who have issues with consistency/intensity and wasted a pick on a goalie.
If they're supposed to have learned anything about the way the NHL works nowadays, I'm sure not seeing it in this draft. I wanted to like the Frk pick but that pick only works if you follow it up with some honey badger type players that can outhustle and outmuscle a playoff opponent.

I liked last year's draft right from the start. I thought it indicated that they were figuring things out and moving in the right direction.
Obviously the jury is still out on all these guys, but I don't like the look of this bunch at all.

Well they are attempting to fill needs. We are pretty deep with defense prospects.
Smith
Ouellet
Sproul
Jensen
Backman
Almqvist
Marchenko
The top 4-5 seem to have a very good shot at making it to the NHL.
The one thing we don't have? Elite goal scorers. I think they are shooting for the fences with Frk and Athanasiou. These guys are not known for their two way game. They have the ability to create offense. Pulu was a nice pick but I am not confident he ever becomes an NHL'er. Both of these guys are in NA and are producing. We have plenty of two-way guys, the Wings are going after scorers. We have to wait and see how it works out.
I understand the Paterson pick because it is based on need. We have no depth beyond Mrazek who hasn't even played a single game against men yet. McCollum is obviously a wash out. Add in the fact this could have been Ozzy's pick and I am intrigued to see what type of judge of talent he is as a scout.
So my take on this draft to this point is the organization is trying to fill needs. It'll take a year or three to see how well they accomplished that goal.
