What's his defensive awareness like? Is he good in his own zone?

He's improved his defensive play this year.
Still needs more work, but improved from being a one dimensional player to a willing defensive player.

It improved under Patrick Roy's tutelage for sure...but he's no Girgensons. He's not going to be your first choice to put out with a minute left up by 1.

Definitely came a long way in that department this year. Remember reading an interview somewhere where he talked about Roy teaching him how to play away from the puck and in his own zone, and admitted it was something he hadn't given any thought to prior to this year, and said it's an area where he wants to continue to improve. He certainly has the size to become a good two-way player, but I think his best defensive strength at this point is probably his ability to play keep-away with the puck.

I'd say 8.5 to 9.0 D.

I was going to say 8.5 but didn't want to be too optimistic. I can't remember the last time we had an 8.5 (even if he is a D probability). I'm pretty sure Myers was an 8.0C or something.

Having seen him play whole year. I honestly think if you want to make him the best center of your team, he's 1,5 to 2 years from playing. He needs another full year of junior hockey and maybe some experience in AHL before making the jump.

Congrats Buffalo and please take care of our great russian.

Sincerely.

The kid has great hands and will do miracles with the puck. My biggest surprise about him was the fact that we've seen a lot of russians with Remparts in last years. And he was the only one to give the effort going back into D zone.

8.5-9.0 C I bet. I personally would give him a 9.0 C

As to that last statement about Russians in general probably has some truth to it as well...Mogilny was really the first Russian to make his mark on this side of the pond. There's a pic of a Ovechkin as a kid wearing a Sabres jacket...he looked up to Mogilny.
I've had that pic in my profile here for awhile.

my rating for him is 8.5 D
a 9 is a bit too optimistic imho.

the overall offensive average is fairly weak in this draft class i think.

8-8.5C seems like a realistic grade for him. Definitely has 1C talent, and Patrick Roy has had nothing but praise for his attitude and work ethic, so a D seems like a sleight to his character and willingness to work.

Did he play on the Russian WJC team that won gold in 2011?

He fell because of a terrible playoff....but it was later revealed he has mononucleosis. What a steal anyways.

my D instead of the C grounds on him only playing one year in north american hockey. not because of physical differences he would easily manage due to his frame, but NHL is yet another big step from the Q, which i am a bit concerned about.

but i have no objections to him proving me wrong about the D .

I was just thinking while watching the highlight video up there, who better to finish some of Grig's setups than Armia.

But questions about his desire to play in the NHL were answered by a beaming smile and excitement about being a Buffalo Sabres prospect.

"I was a little bit nervous about the team who drafted me. But I'm happy it was this team," he said.

"I had a feeling that probably they would draft me. They were interested in me. I talked to them a lot during the season, and during the combines."

Instead, Grigorenko is a Sabre even if he doesn't know all that much about Buffalo.

"Alex Mogilny played here. He was from my city. Dominik Hasek was there. It's a city on Niagara Falls," he said.

What he knows for sure about Buffalo: That he's happy to have been drafted by the Sabres, and happy with his new threads.

"All the time, I think the Buffalo Sabres jersey is, like, one of the most beautiful jerseys in the League," he said.

jfb, again, you've had the most extensive look at Mikhail out of all of us - are the work ethic concerns overstated?

He was always moving in the games that I caught.

whats the matter, he got 2/3 right, thats a positive mark in school .

he probably meant the area. his english has indeed improved but he might still not get some things the way he wants to

area wise, buffalo is not that far away from niagara falls. as long he does not say buffalo is on the atlantic ocean, i am comfortable with his geography skills .

one day after, i still cant believe we got him ...

Khabarovsk is only slightly closer to Moscow than Honolulu . Moscow is further than Anchorage, New Delhi, and Kabul. Who knew.
