Linus Ullmark, Goalie – 163rd Overall, 2012

Kevin Devine (Buffalo Sabres)

“With all the scouts that we hired last year, one of the scouts we hired was a guy named Fredrik Andersson, who was a former general
manager with Modo – and he’s a former goalie and goalie coach in that league. When we made the hires over there, one of the things
we wanted to do was look especially at Finland and Sweden to see if we can get some of those late round guys like Pekka Rinne into
our organization. We had him over for our combine also. Another scout Toby O’Brien – also a former goalie – liked him as well, so we
thought it would be a good pick.”

Big. Good. I don't know anything about him but am interested to learn more. We could really use a goalie in the system with the potential to play in the NHL.

Wait, Tampa and Columbus left a goalie available?

Long body, would like to hear from some who've seen him to get an idea on style and strengths.

Idk anything about him. The Goalie Guild had this blurb:
Quote:
Since he wasn’t listed on the CSS midterm rankings, I know next to nothing about newcomer Linus Ullmark (MODO J-20). But after researching his basic information online, I’m determined to find out what type of potential this kid has. One of my favorite aspects of scouting is discovering goalies I’ve never heard of before, and then seeing how they fit into the mix with the rest of the draft-eligible prospects. More often than not, it is the International goalies that come out of nowhere in the second half of the season that end up making a big splash in the draft. And there’s no better example of that than Predators prospect Magnus Hellberg. What makes this kid even more interesting is that his birthplace isn’t listed on his Elite Prospects webpage. Hmmmmm!

No info on his play but his personality seems a lot more like Marty Biron than Ryan Miller.

I think this is his facebook page http://www.facebook.com/linus.ullmark.5

Article on being called up to Modo:

from the Sabres Prospects draft preview:

6th round, 163rd overall

Linus Ullmark – G, 6’3, 198 lbs., Modo (SWE Jr)

Big and raw, the talented Ullmark enters his second draft year after an excellent season with Modo’s J20 squad that saw him post a solid 2.76 goals against average and .918 save percentage with the storied franchise. Ullmark’s play steadily improved throughout the season and into the playoffs, where he sparkled with a 2.24 GAA, .927 sv%, and one shutout in five starts.

Growing up dreaming of playing for Modo’s top club, Ullmark got his wish at the Christmas break when he was called in to back up Mikael Tellqvist while Anton Forsberg was away at the U20s. When Telllqvist fell ill, Ullmark was thrust into his first start as an 18-year old on two hours notice and held up well in an OT loss to Lulea.

While the bottleneck kept him buried most of the year, we’re still giving Ullmark a good shot to be drafted by the Sabres and an equally good chance to earn a larger SEL role with Modo before coming to North America.

I'm a big proponent of taking one goalie every draft. They are just so hit-or-miss...that you just gotta keep taking and hope you get a hit every so often to maintain goalie depth throughout the organization.

And with an ECHL affiliation, I'm an even bigger proponent of it since if you do get multiple hits...you've got places for them to play.

Devine named two of our scouts who were in on this selection: Fredrik Andersson, former goalie and MODO GM, and Toby O'Brien, former coach/GM in the ECHL and EJHL.

Those stats are wrong to say the least. Unless we found ourselves a sniper goalie

I agree. Goalies are so so hit and miss, yet so crucial to team success...you can never draft too many goalies.

What Baker failed to mention was that the Sabres hired him as one of those 20 or so scouts. Nice job, KB.

Ullmark is one of four goalies invited to Sweden's summer camp in Norrtälje; the others are Dansk, Lassinantti and Lundström.

There will be two games versus the Czech Republic, as well as intrasquad scrimmages, before announcing which players will make the August trip to Lake Placid, where Sweden will play a total of four games (Finland x2, USA, USA-White).

Not bad. Nice to see some picks being a direct result or more scouts.

I think Bakes also nailed a pick last year.. can't remember which though.
