The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6-2, 229-lb defenseman Luke Schenn from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for right wing James van Riemsdyk, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Schenn, 22 (11/2/1989), is entering his fifth NHL season. He was drafted fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in 310 games, posting 14 goals and 61 assists for 75 points along with 217 PIM. This past season, Schenn recorded two goals and 20 assists for 22 points in 79 games. He is the older brother of Flyers center Brayden Schenn.

Schenn for JVR makes a good deal of sense. Flyers were looking for help on D and Leafs need a big forward. Fresh start for JVR.

Just Schenn? I'm happy but would like another prospect.

Good luck JVR.

I like this a lot. I see them both breaking out big time.

Woah, we have both Schenns...that's weird.

Maybe flip them both for Weber?

I wouldn't say that this trade isn't necessarily bad for the Flyers, they needed defense and JVR has had some histories with injuries.

Not sure about this......I wish JVR was healthy......that is my only concern about him...being injury prone otherwise he's an immense talent to lose straight up for Schenn.

Buckle up

Not sure about this recent trend of Holmgren trading people after signing them long-term

Meh, I guess it makes sense for both teams. I was really hoping to package JVR for something bigger but what can you do. You have to admit, it is cool having the two brothers.

I would much rather see how JVR pans out than grab Luke Schenn. It's not like we're saving that much cap space either.

I'd say it's a good trade to be honest.. Both needed a change of scenery and both have been inconsistent over the last 2-3 years.. We could have gotten more

The way I see it, even if JVR becomes the better player, which is a good possibility, the Flyers don't need more offense. They need defense. You can't always just look and say X is better than Y.

As a Leaf fan, you guys got a core player and a heart and soul guy today. It's going to kill me seeing him in anything other than blue and white. He'll be an absolute beast in the playoffs for you. Going to hate playing against him four times a year.......

Leafs fan here that will miss Schenn. Schenn is a great guy and will more than likely develop into something special. He's had a bumpy NHL career so far, but it's just been a lack of consistency.

His rookie year was solid, but had a sophomore slump.

His third year was great, but he slumped again this past season.

The cap is still gonna go up some way or another... It's provisionally $70.3m atm, would be just over $73 if the current CBA rules were applied fully.

I don't see it. Anahiem is looking for a 2C. We aren't going to trade Brayden after adding his brother.

Anahiem would like want Voracek, Simmonds/Read, 2013 1st.... which is reasonable for Bobby Ryan, but can we honestly afford to do a 2 for 1 winger deal now that we've dealt JVR?

I am optimistic here. It's obvious that our off-season is just getting started. Whether that means B. Ryan or Nash or something else in free agency, we have a lot left in store.

But the market for defenders is pretty bare this summer, and Schenn can step in immediately. Coburn, Schenn, Grossman is very solid to give Timonen some support.

It also frees up room to trade Meszaros if need be.

Still need a top pairing defenseman because Schenn is far from that.
