Hurricanes select LW Brock McGinn at #47 (Guelph)

TSN rank: #59

position: LW
size: 5'11/174
team: Guelph Storm
born: Feb 2nd, 1994

stats: 19Pts (12G, 7A) in 33 Games

brother of Shark Jamie McGinn. He has good skating and showed some nice development this year in a limited role for Guelph, but he missed half the season due to injury. Definitely a reach in the 2nd.

Bob McKenzie's take:
Quote:
Brock is a hard edged player who competes with the idea that nothing else matters but winning so I will do whatever is needed to help my team win. He gets involved physically along the boards, in the corners, at the net and he simply doesn't know what the word quit means. He is a smart player and knows what he can bring to help the team win. He skates well and is capable of contributing if the game is tilted towards skill and pace or a rumble in the jungle. He can contribute offensively and he has good awareness and knows how to compliment the efforts of others. When the puck is dropped at the beginning of the game, Brock is not a player a coach needs to worry about. He will size up the game and know what must be done at any particular time and regardless of the challenges that may be faced, he will be ready to meet those challenges. He's a player who finds his way onto winning teams because his contributions are valued.

Read a few write ups, sounds like Dwyer. I could be misinterpreting.

Odd pick considering who was on the board. Meh. Looks like we drafted Pat Dwyer's future replacement in the 2nd round.

McGinn missed a lot of time this year with an injury. A little off the board with the 2nd rounder (in my mind).
Competes like Chad Larose, but I would argue has a better goal scoring ability.

So he's a lock to score 25 and have an equally nice smile?

Lock to score 25 points in the OHL but I'm sure he has an NHL level smile.

What a waste of a pick, REACHING in the 2nd round? Kid will never play an NHL game.

Are you massively overreacting or trolling?

Ranked in the bottom of the 2nd round, chosen in the mid-second round.

The horror.

So far, the Canes haven't pick anything resembling BPA.

2012 is on pace to be the worst draft in franchise history.

Good thing the best time to grade a draft is the middle of the 3rd round, then.

De Guiseppe was at least close to BPA.

Yep, he was rated as a late first by prettymuch everyone, can't get much closer to BPA in the early 2nd then that.

Guelph Storm forward Brock McGinn will join older brothers Jamie and Tye to have his name called at an NHL draft when the teams convene in Pittsburgh for the 2012 NHL Draft.
How long before we collect all the McGinns? First we take Marc, then sign all of them.

Staal- Staal- Staal
McGinn- McGinn- McGinn

Staal- Stahl (let's say he's cousin of them)

I had McGinn ranked 47th among players from the OHL for the draft. Here's what I wrote.

McGinn is a terrific energy forward who projects as a checking line winger at the next level. He's got a motor that's always running, but also has good hockey sense and gets himself in good position for scoring opportunities. His hustle, especially on the forecheck and along the wall, also creates scoring opportunities for his linemates. The main concern is that he's not overly big, (around 5'11, 170lbs), and that he relies on his aggressiveness away from the puck to be successful. He'll definitely need to get stronger to be more effective offensively. And to stay away from injuries, like the broken wrist he suffered this year that limited him to just 33 games. Considering the success that his brother has had in the NHL, McGinn definitely has the genetic make up to be an effective NHL player.

I'm not sure I see why he was ranked so highly (Central Scouting was high on him, he appeared inside Bob Mackenzie's top 60), and why he was subsequently such a high pick. But he could certainly develop into a useful NHL player.

So a Pat Dwyer with the potential to be a LaRose. And we drafted him in the 3rd. Hopefully JR makes us look stupid and him a genius with this pick, but I won't hold my breath.

Where do you think 3rd and 4th liners come from?

UFA contracts with the Carolina Hurricanes after not being qualified by their previous team

It's funny, because it's true...but is it the wrong way to go about populating your 3rd and 4th lines?

I get the general impression that the Canes drafted a lot of kids this year whose upside is the 3rd/4th line. These are usually the guys that you're not sure you want to qualify when they hit RFA status. Seems like you should go for skill or size (or both) and hope that they achieve more than 3rd/4th line status...if they don't fit anywhere in your lineup and you have bottom-6 holes, you get UFAs to fill them.

But I'm no hockey GM, for sure...

FWIW, I think this draft lacked talent from pick #1 to pick #200.
There were very few trades made by teams to move up or move down, compared to previous years.... I think that is a reflection of the overall quality (lack there of) of this draft class.
I'd normally be hard on the Canes taking these 'project players' in rounds 2+, but this year it was ineveitable.
