Smart decision by both sides to go with the short contract. It gives Duchene a chance to prove that last season was a fluke, and make some big bucks when he hits free agency again.
I really like this contract. Very low risk for the Avs, $3.5 mil per year for 2 years for Duchene is nothing, and Duchene is still an RFA at the end of it. On the other hand, from Duchene's POV, if he signed long term now after his poor season, he'd be looking at signing for a low cap hit (say, $4.5 - 5 mil per year), this way he can really prove himself over the next 2 years, and earn a bigger contract.
I'll bet Duchene is thinking "in 2 years when I'm an RFA again, I'm gonna be a PPG star and prove that I'm worth that huge deal," while the Avs are thinking "we hope so!"
Or maybe, Duchene loves the Avalanche so he took a 'hometown discount'.
No......

Completely agree with everything you said here. It was the right decision for both sides.
