According to EliteProspects.com:
Quote:
A mobile two-way defenseman. Vikstrand plays a pretty simple game and can be used in most situations. Has a quite good shot. Plays with determination and has decent timing when it comes to the physical aspect of the game. Average puck skills. (EP 2012)

My Swedish Leksand-Ottawa fan is going to be unhappy with that pick lol. Leksand-Mora is like Ottawa-Toronto in terms of warm fuzzy feelings.

Sounds like another former Sens' draft pick - Sami Salo.

Dorion makes him sound like another Claesson. Probably really good value in the 7th round.

Like this pick a lot. Thought he'd be gone much earlier, but then again, pretty much all the Swedes in this draft fell further than expected and some picks "out of the blue".

Will talk to him and write some more on him later today if you're curious.

One of Wikstrand's best friends is Leafs draftee Tom Nilsson.

Should've gone with all Swedes, eh?

I don't think it was a particularly good draft for Sweden in general, but you can't expect every draft to be great for a small nation (in terms of numbers).

Agreed, this was no '09, obviously, but still a lot of good players taken too late or not at all. This is surprising since the ratio of bad picks per pick out of Sweden is so low.

Are Swedish players eligible to be invited to development camps and signed as FA's at this age?
What would the rules around this be?

We dont have to sign him for 2 years. To answer your question yes he can attend camp without a contract.

The guy seems a bit serious in the SensTV clips... Didn't even smile when he came down to collect his jersey. I guess the fact he was there at all is a good sign.

I'm assuming he just meant that some guys drafted in later rounds don't attend the draft, AFAIK.

Especially European guys. Makes sense, it's a long trip, and if you don't think you'll be picked until late (or at all), might not be worth the trip. Or, you know, alternate plans and all.

I just think that, if I were to get drafted, I would be excited about it. Maybe it's just a case of being nervous in a new place and not having a complete grasp of English.

Yeah, but I don't know why that would be a good or a bad sign, to be honest. Some later round guys aren't brought over by their agents due to the fact that sitting there for two days just to return home having seen friends' and teammates' names called and not your own is a traumatizing experience, I'm sure. Generally, they don't bring anyone over without being certain they'll be drafted.

Maybe explains why he looked a little intense. Kid probably worked himself up into some ridiculous depression.

"Oh god, I traveled 7000km, and sat here for two days, and I'm not going to get picked. I told my family I'd be on tv. All my friends are watching the streaming online feed. It's already the 14th pick of the last round, and my name hasn't been called. What if my agent screwed up, and didn't add my name to the draft list? What if my name isn't in the database, and they don't even know I exist? Oh good god, nobody knows I'm here! I could disappear forever, and no one would ever find out! That's it, I'm quitting hockey forever and joining a monesta...

...what? Ottawa? Oh god, I think I'm having a heart attack..."

You got some real life chuckles outta me there, haha.

I'm surprised at how low he was picked. One of the local rags said he was ranked 23rd for European skaters. How do you go from that to 7th round pick? It seemed like a very anti-Swede draft this year.

If we're referring to the interview, I think he was just concentrating on hearing and understanding the questions. He looked focused.

Or, maybe he's just that intense all the time.

If he never smiles and he's Swedish, he might get along with Lehner.
