Will be cool to have brothers on the team. As for the trade, unsure how I feel. I think schenn really strengthens our d with top pairing potential but I really hate seeing jvr go this early in his career.

Leaf fan coming in peace.

Schenn isn't flashy, But he's one hell of a hard nosed shutdown d-men that you just win with. He didn't have a good season this past year, But I think a lot of that was Ron Wilson's system(or lack there of) When this guy gets back on track, You could have your own Marc Staal or Brooks Orpik.

It's so easy to see this deal haunting us.

When Richards and Carter were dealt, I was shocked and upset, but at least with the return we got, I was intrigued by how things would work out.

In this case, I am almost sure we will lose the deal. Hope I'm wrong.
Can you sign an extension 3 or 4 years from the end of the contract?

This x a million. The guy has been the definition of a class act his entire tenure in Toronto, and he's a 100% community guy. I'll still wear my Schenn jersey with pride, and you guys are lucky to have him. I think he's going to be great for you guys.

As I said, he's a lesser skater/more physical Coburn.

He had a bad year, but he'll rebound.

Still not worth JVR.

That being said, I don't know if he was ever the right fit for this team.
Same could be said for Schenn.

You guys will finally see Schenn's value to you in the playoffs, something he couldn't do with us in Toronto. But damn, if playing with his brother doesn't spark his ass, the Philly fans will, you guys are just nasty, and will probably bring him back to the Kelowna Rockets nasty-Luke Schenn.

Enough with the "lack of patience" thing. If a guy becomes expendable, like JvR did, it is not a lack of patience to improve another aspect of your team. Just because he is young, doesn't mean they gave up on him or don't have the patience for guys to develop. JvR missed half the season and they scored a gob of goals without him. Their defense was pretty damned bad and there is nothing in the minors to really get excited about. JvR, outside form a handful of games, hasn't looked any better than Luke Schenn has looked. This isn't about losing patience, giving up. It is about an opportunity to get a young player who could potentially be the defensive anchor of the franchise. Everyone wants to improve the defense, but no one wants to give anything up. That isn't how it works.

The thing about Luke Schenn though is that he's believed to be wildly overrated and so that "high ceiling" might just be wishful thinking.

Personally, I haven't paid too much attention to Luke Schenn...all I know is that he's been extremely inconsistent

We had arguably the best offense in the league without JVR.

That's the only sticking point here.

We didn't really "need" him.

I think Luke fits flyers hockey. The guy is a great leader, not the greatest fighter but he'll fight a lion to protect his teammates, and he is hard to play against, he'll paste everything to the boards. I was hoping the Schenn brothers would unite in Toronto, but I like Luke and wish him nothing but the best with Brayden in the city of brotherly love . I think he'll have a great year for you guys.

Cheers

Absolutely. And he's not a pronger but out top 5 as of now really has no holes. All solid players. Said to see jvr go but we need D not top line potential on the 4th line

Schenn led defensemen in hits last year. Pretty good.

Wait and see kinda trade. What # is Schenn gonna be?

I totally agree,

Fans have been dogging JVR for a couple of seasons and have wanted him gone. He wasn't in a package for a more high caliber d-man? Ok I get that, but I'm glad we picked up Luke Schenn. I'm actually happy to see this trade.

Hopefully it's a good move for both players. I'm really happy Luke gets to play with his brother, I'm sure that will energize him a bit.

I just know when the Leafs actually get decent and make the playoffs we're probably going to have to go through Philly, and I hate the idea of playing against the Schenn brothers.

JVR is also widely believed to be "overrated"

Its a good move for both teams that address needs for now and in the future.

Schenn does not have top pairing upside. He's going to be a 3#.

He doesn't have any offensive tools.

This is such a knee-jerk reaction from holmgren. Such a dumb, dumb trade.

I am happy because this pretty much means that Couturier, B Schenn, Simmonds and Voracek are not getting traded as a part of any package for a forward (seeing JVR was the main piece going back in nay big time trade proposal, and now I cannot fathom Homer splitting up the Brothers Schenn).

Schenn is at worst a top 4 guy. Quality defensive dman we needed. He had a down year, but I think/hope he'll recapture his form sooner rather than later.

JVR is at worst a second line guy. JVR was a beast in the playoffs in 2011, but he has been pretty much a non factor and a luxury player for us over the last few regular seasons. JVR has the higher ceiling and could easily be a 65 pt+ power forward in the NHL but that remains to be seen.

I like it for both teams.

Meh, judging form the reactions of people around here, one might say JvR is also wildly overrated. From the first time I saw him play on the Phantoms I wasn't big on him. When he played out of his mind in the playoffs, I turned around. This year he was riddled with injuries. Who knows what kind of season he will have next year. I don't think his improvement is any more or less guaranteed than Schenn's. Again, I still think the Flyers should have gotten a little more coming back, but at this point, I'd rather have Schenn than JvR.
