The problem with Schenn is that he just hasn't developed. Yikes. I know young defensemen can have their wobbles before reaching great success, but I think we are taking the bigger risk in the deal.

Cue the wahmbulance.

This team needed less flakes like JvR and more attitudes like Luke "worst defenseman in the league" Schenn.

I personally hope JVR becomes the annual near30 goal scorer that most of us expect that he can be.

Easy now just relax and turn the engine off. Give the draft a few years will ya?

Which is retired.

He wore 15 at the 2008 WJC.

He wore 5 at the 2009 WC (oddly, Coburn wore 55...lol)

Was it worth JVR? I don't think so, but we needed defense. Lock up Carle and Gaustad and call it an offseason.

Hartnell - Giroux - Briere
Simmonds - Schenn - Voracek
Read - Couturier - Wellwood
Gaustad - Talbot - Holmstrom/Sestito

Timonen - Schenn
Coburn - Grossmann
Meszaros - Carle
I sit on the fence with Carle, don't hate him, don't love him. He's good at what he does, bad at what he doesn't. I'd be pretty happy if he resigned now. I also like Gustafsson, maybe he should get more of a chance? However I'm not so keen on the forwards. I would still like to see a much better winger rather than moving a centre to wing. Danny has never been that good there IMO. I'd be fairly happy to resign Jagr for another year.

Leaf fan coming in peace:

Luke has awesome potential but he's really regressed since his rookie season. His shot couldn't break glass and he handles the puck like a grenade.

He's always among the league leaders in hits but they are more of the 'rubbing a guy out' variety, he just smothers people against the boards but rarely can he lay the open ice hit due to his lack of skating speed.

If he can improve his quickness and play a meaner game, he'll be a good 2nd pairing player. Maybe he'll be ballsier on your squad but he played a very timid game on the leafs.

Good luck Luke, wish you all the best!

I personally think Schenn will shine in your system. Quite shocked he's gone to be honest, was a big supporter for him and have watched him go on a roller coaster through his development.

This guy is a character guy to say the least, he's mature beyond his years and is willing to improve constantly. He has been working on various thing throughout his career with the Leafs and one of the problems he had this year is we think he got too big in the offseason and it slowed him down too much. If you guys can make him shed some weight and improve his skating, he's quite the defensive force.

By the way, I suggest watching his hit on Malkin over and over. Might make some of you guys look at some of the potential that Schenn offers.

I hope the best for Schenn and the Philly organization and hopefully JVR is the type of guy the Leafs need.

"WTF HOMER!! WE NEED DEFENSE, NOT OFFENSE YOU IDIOT!!!!"

Trade forward for defensive defenseman:
"WTF HOMER!! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!!! WORST TRADE EVER!!"

This is such a knee-jerk reaction from holmgren. Such a dumb, dumb trade.
He's averaged 20 points a year through his four years. I don't think he'll ever be an offensive force, but I don't think he's quite as bad as you're suggesting.

Regardless, the one thing that this trade is not is knee-jerk. It has been in the works for months...based on speculation, reports, etc.

I just noticed, even if we replaced Carle with Bourdon, we would then have 5 D-men who aren't afraid to smash people... nice.

Schenn will fit in nicely on your team. Much better than on Toronto. Toronto had no structure like you guys do.

Hope this trade works out for both teams.

I figured one day we'd get Brayden, or we'd trade Luke to you. Looks like the latter happened.

Luke can be inconsistent at times, but when he figures it out, look out. He has playoff warrior and shutdown d-man written all over him. I bet the change in scenery (and linking up w/ his younger bro) will give him some jump

Pronger should teach him to have more of a mean streak and it will be the best thing to happen to Schenn

Have had lots of respect for the Flyers since the 2002-2004 playoff series; if Schenn was playing for any other team other than the Leafs, I'm glad it's with Philly (who build a team and play the right way)

Anyone with knowledge of Ron Wilson's run and gun system able to explain how Lavi's system is different? Schenn struggled tremendously with the open offensive system.

Should be good to see the Schenn brothers bang bodies. Homer needs to sit on his hands and let these kids grow. Don't trade anymore young guys. Get some veteran role players in free agency..

I'm particularly struck by the reaction of the posters who suggested that we flip JVR to Carolina and take Trouba...who's basically the same kind of player...
