They have plenty of scoring but they dont have much in the way of D. Its a gamble.
Philly is Read, Voracek, Schenn, Couturier, Giroux, Hartnell, and Simmonds. Van Riemsdyk was just adding to the treasure they had up front, you cant afford all of those guys long term. Traded from a strength for a position of weakness.

I agree with the concept, but Luke Schenn is not a very good hockey player.
Confirmed that the Wild won't submit a qualifying offer and that Lats will be UFA unless he accepts a lower offer. Didn't see any other "confirmation" before, sorry if it's redundant.
Omg. Im just glad im not a leafs fan. Its fun making fun of them but now.. Lol those guys just cant take a break. Yesterday, we stole their favorite guy in gally, they drafted rielly instead of forsberg and grigs, and now this, trading for an injury-prone player.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in on a one year deal.
Schenn was overrated at times, but I thought they'd get a little more than just JVR. Power forwards get overrated themselves though, I'm sure their fans will be happy if he can pot 25+ goals. Maybe you'll get 82 games out of JVR and Connolly if you add them together though.
i like this deal for the leafs - they dealt from a position of strength and added a 6'3 kid who just turned 23 who can pot 25-30 goals. it helps them up front a lot.
bergevin needs to upgrade our top 6 and add a d man. isles, canes and now i think the leafs got better this weekend

Lats had a terrible year last year dealing with the concussion, when he came on l'Anti-Chambre, he mentioned how he had trouble keeping his eyes open and other normal activity. Said he feels much better now.
I would welcome him back (and he actually wants to play in Montreal, never wanted to leave) on a one year contract to prove himself. He could be a winger with Plekanec and Gionta.

JVR got overrated to the point that he's now kind of underrated. He looked very promising when healthy. Much like Schenn himself he's overrated because of draft pedigree, and I love how Pacioretty looks like a far more reliable player, but I'd take a risk on JVR over a 6th defender plug like Luke Schenn.
Who knows, maybe Schenn will turn it around. But JVR showed more in the 3 days he was healthy than Schenn has in over a year. Remember how much of a mess he was for Canada?
Pouliot traded to Tampa, Guess we can officially start calling him a journey-man.
With Moore, Bergeron, Pyatt and Pouliot all becoming a part of the Tampa org not long after being Canadiens, we can probably guess that Julien Brisebois' word as a pro-scout was respected in the habs org during the trades and signings.
Scoring wasn't a problem for the Leafs. Defense and goaltending was. Schenn was part of the solution, not the problem. Just Burke's obsession with tough forwards coming to the fore here. It really wasn't necessary to move Schenn to acquire JVR. The only forward they actually needed was a big centre.
After this trade, the Leafs are left with a bigger hole on D and are still missing a net minder. I think the trade was unnecessary from the Leafs POV.

I think his injuries have been a big problem though. Figured the Leafs would want some insurance to go along with JVR in the deal. I still think Schenn has promise, maybe a guy like Pronger mentoring him will be good for him.

Or, we can breathe a big sigh of relief that Julien Brisebois was not brought back to the Canadiens management team.
