My guess is that they're expecting him to turn pro after one season as a Catamount.

I think Darcy's quote was just nullifying the theory (without actually saying it) that Girgensons won't be a Sabre for several years (until he gets a degree).

At the time of the pick, I was still overjoyed from the Grigorenko selection that I couldn't really process how good of a pick this was, but man I'm excited about this guy. Big, physical, two-way center, good leader, completely team-first and puts everything on the line when he plays. Literally sounds like he was born to play in Buffalo, and we all know he's going to be a fan favourite the minute he steps on the ice.

I love the Bobby Holik comparison thrown out in here, and other scouts have said Dustin Brown or Ryan Callahan. Every team needs one of these guys in the playoffs, and hopefully the Sabres have finally found theirs.

I keep annoying people by typing "Zemgus" for no real reason on IRC. I'm obsessed and can't get his name out of my head.

Not happening. He's stated on national TV that they treated him like crap and he has no interest in going.

As long as he's not in the NHL, he's a lock and likely a lock to be their captain.
There may even be a chance that he goes to the Worlds next year, like guys from smaller hockey nations end up doing sometimes (Kopitar and Vanek).
He's not as high-end as those guys and Latvia has more depth than Austria and Slovenia, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happened.

Would be awesome to see the Sabres have Girgensons for Latvia, Grigorenko for Russia, Armia for Finland, McCabe for the USA and hopefully a surprise guy like Catenacci for Canada. Would make it a real fun tournament.

They did do poorly, but only Denmark was relegated.
Latvia will be in Group A with the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, and Switerzland next year.

14.) Buffalo Sabres (From CGY) – Zemgus Girgensons, C, Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) – The Sabres packaged their second first-rounder and a second-rounder to Calgary for this selection, which they used to add truculent Latvian center Zemgus Girgensons. Girgenson’s size, strength and intangibles are all great news for Buffalo – as in the span of two picke, the Sabres jump from among the worst teams in terms of prospect depth at center, to the best.

Value Grade: (B); Fit Grade: (B+); Overall Grade: (B)

Am I old for having seen Balderis play with the Stars? Or the CCCP team in '80?

WJC camps will be real interesting for Sabre fans this summer (they should be all the time, but hey, now there will be more of a reason).

I wouldn't listen to that person anymore.

He has the wrong Catenacci.
He's talking about Michael Catenacci, a player that isn't related to Daniel that played for the Kitchener Rangers.
Daniel's brother is named Michael also but never played in the OHL.

Devine commented in one of his interviews that they didn't want to use 21 to move up from 12 to get Grigorenko, and that they had a deal working for 14 earlier in the week. It seems they had laid the groundwork to get up there previously with Feaster.
