McDonagh signed on July 5 or 6,2010. He came to prospects camp the previous week. McDonagh spoke to the Rangers brass when he was here. He loved what he experienced. McD went back to Wisconsin and told his agent to begin talks with the Rangers. He was signed 2 days later. Its was the 4th of July weekend so it took an extra day. Ryan told his teammates in person he was leaving Wisconsin. Most of the players hang around campus going to summer school. There was no guarantee of a roster spot. Come to camp and earn a job. The roster spots are open. Its up to you but the opportunity is there. Same thing with Schultz. I would send Torts,McDonagh and Stepan to meet with Schultz. He is probably attending summer school at Wisconsin. Show him the depth chart on D. You come to camp(assuming there is camp in Sept)and work your ass off,you will get the job on D. McD had a good camp but the Rangers had a waivers issue with Sauer and there wasn't room for McD. No issues with waivers this time because they only have 3 D under contract with DZ being a group II. Mac wasn't hurt playing 3 months in the AHL.
really like your logic on this one, actually sounds like a good plan ... If we could reel in Schultz, this seems like a good way.

Yeah but their d is weak. An offensive defenseman would love to have Marc Staal as a potential d partner. Not to mention Hank will clean up most of his mistakes.

They have some nice defensive prospects though coming down the pipes like Teubert and Klefbom.

I'd send everything we have at the kid on Wednesday. Get him here and fast. Number one priority on July 1st has to be Schultz.

that may be the worst comparison possible to make your point... because in using just Gretzky's name, it brings to mind all of his accomplishments and standing during his already past, great NHL career.

let's say that wayne gretzky is in the exact same situation as schultz-- drafted by anaheim and found a loophole to become a free agent. let's say that wayne is up for grabs. does his 'projected' skill-set not earn him the max ELC (which is there for a reason)? when every other team in the league is going to be offering the MAX, then you have to match that to be at even odds. are you going to offer a projected to be #1 player $2 million flat and expect them to sign when vancouver is offering $3.8 million? of course not. the guy earned the pay in college. all drafts are a risk. if he turns out to be a #1-2 defenseman then the risk pays out. if he doesn't then boo hoo we lost cap space for a guy who had a very low risk of failure.
personal thought on schultz specifically: the max ELC may not be earned by the kid, but we don't have the option when every other team in the league will offer him the max without a question. it's a competitive market and we can't let anything-- especially a couple million (bonuses included) deter him from signing here over another team. i want this kid more than anybody on the market. nobody is a guaranteed superstar their first season. for all we know gretzky could have had a concussion and sucked the rest of his career-- but the risk of overpaying for a couple years imo is an acceptable one for the potential gain that you get by offering him the max.

this. the rangers are the perfect situation for a young defenseman. plenty of support from the forwards and your defense partner. not to mention, the reigning vezina winner at the end of the line.
If Schultz signs with Edmonton or Toronto, the kid obviously doesn't care about winning a Stanley Cup ever, so oh well. If he wants to win something, he'll have a hell of a shot with the Rangers.

I dunno they just drafted a kid in the first round and already have young NHL Dmen with Erixon and McIlrath knocking at the door.
Would like the kid to sign here but if I am him I likely go to a team I feel will play me for sure. If he has a bad camp the Rangers have other young options.

i agree with your reasoning but i think the other gentleman is just objecting to the baggage your use of gretzky brings. either way, i agree with what - i think - you're saying. you spend money on the projectable assets when they're available for just cash. worst case, you're overpaying for a couple of seasons and - actually - you can even leave the guy in the minors if he proves to suck.

Disagree. Edm could be a powerhouse in a couple years. Adding shultz only helps that.
The Rangers don't have a player like Schultz in their system. They can have a million D but they have don't someone like him. The Rangers aren't interested in wasting their time and his time. McIlrath needs at least a year in the AHL. He doesn't have the skating and puck skills of Schultz. The Rangers need a righty which is the side Schultz plays. Erixon plays the left side. Skjei will be in college next season. There is a spot for Schultz on the Rangers. Besides Girardi,the Rangers don't have another healthy RD under contract.
