Who would you pick? Round 1

So as i said in the prospects thread after each pick we are going to keep track of who on this board wanted what, and what the consensus is the player the canucks should have picked. I will do this at the draft so we can see who knows what they are talking about....and it should be fun for bragging rights at the all-star break and the end of the year next year....(that's if the Mayans weren't right about the end of the world thing.)

So after each round i will set up a poll and then close it within 24 hours. The players in the Poll will be the next ten picks or any concensus top players that fall(ex. we reach the third round and Thrower is still around then he would be an option on the list) if the player you would choose is not on the voting list you can choose other and then list the player you would have choosen.

For the first round the Canucks chose Forward Brendan Gaunce from the Belville Bulls.

Maybe a mod can put the poll up:
1:Henrik Samuelsson
2:Brady Skjei
3:Stefan Matteau
4:Tanner Pearson
5:Finn
6:Collberg
7:Aberg
8: Di Giuseppe
9:Thrower
10:Sissons
11:Bystrom
12:Frk

I would've taken Collberg. I think he was the BPA. However Gaunce is a solid pick and will be a nice addition to our roster.

My Top-10 list at #26:
Gaunce
Kerdiles
Thrower - I have a pretty good feeling about him
Matteau
Severson - I have an even better feeling about him
Finn
Colberg
Aberg
Samuelsson
Skeij - Reminds me of Yann Sauve for some reason

The other guys I get a good feeling about in this draft are Jankowski and Hart. Plus I like Faksa and Girgensons.

at 26, and of course ceteris paribus to what happened at the draft

Thrower
Gaunce
Collberg

in that order

An honest question, how can you have an opinion on most of these guys?

How awesome their name sounds. Duh. I mean, Frk's obviously a guy who makes his own rules. "Who needs vowels anyways?"

EDIT:Shoot he wasn't on the list. But he should be. Honestly.

Collberg had 0 points this year in the SEL. I like him too, but we need size.

I thought we shouldve taken a defenseman, maybe Damon Severson or Dalton Thrower.

But I'm very happy with getting Gaunce where we did get him. Could've sworn Calgary dropped to get him.

Happy with Gaunce at that pick. Others I would have been happy with were Collberg, Sameulsson, Matteau, Thrower, Bystrom. But Gaunce was the BPA, IMO.

Oh I wasn't trying to sound like I've seen all these guys, I'm not a scout by any means. I just base my opinion off of the feeling I pick up regarding the guys. And no it's not rational.

I watch some of them, a little bit, and I try to read as many scouting reports on as many prospects as I can throughout the year, but for me I have to settle with just guessing.

I will say though, my "feelings" have been pretty good - last year at #29, where the Canucks picked, I had

Saad
Jurco
Jenner
Jensen

And the guys I had good feelings about were Hamilton, Baertschi, Armia, Saad and Jurco. Eerily good guesses eh at least as far as they've progressed up to this point in time.

Edit: and to be honest, part of my feeling is based on their name; how good of a hockey name I think it sounds like. Very scientific formula.

Make one of these threads for round 2.

There will be lots of people unhappy with the pick.

Since it seems there are a lot of malcontents about how we drafted, lets get this thread going and put peoples money where their mouths are. List who you would have taken over who Gillis picked, then we can look back and see who has the better eye for talent.

1st = Gaunce - didn't think he'd fall to us. Very Happy.

2nd = Severson - not unhappy with Mallet but would rather have picked Severson.

5th = Tomas Hyka - again, not unhappy with the pick but I probably would have went with Hyka, simply because I knew more about him.

I have no issues with either of the 6th or 7th rounders. In fact I like the Beattie pick.

I hope this thread gets some responses and a sticky, because I'd like to look back on it in 2-3+ years.

Here's what would make me happy. If we sign Makarov and Paul De Jersey to ELCs in our tryout camp. That would be a bit of redmeption. Except I think if a player headed to college signs a SPC then he can't go to college, and has to join the organization right away... so maybe it would have been good to use a 7th rounder on a player like DeJersey who's going to college - then you get to watch him for 4 years and decide if he merits an ELC. Btw this is the exact same thing I said about Joey Lallegia immediately after the 2011 draft. I hope THIS time I'm wrong.

Frk would look great on a jersey too, my shoulders would look huge sporting that name. Gotta get rid of this Kannegiesser jersey, the Ka and er go past my elbows.

That's reasoning I can get behind. Some people seem genuinely disappointed when a guy they love who they've never seen gets passed over.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, here are the WHL players I`d have taken at every selection :

1 - Damon Severson
2 - Tim Bozon
5 - Travis Brown
6 - Carter Rigby
7 - Cody Corbett

Will be interested to see how that compares to our actual selections in this draft.

I would've tried to find a way to manoeuvre around with the top two picks to get myself in a spot where i was more comfortable.

But that out the window, i would've gone with Aberg in the first.

I really wish Gillis had traded up to get Maata by adding our second.( Maybe with Calgary after their Buffalo trade). Essentially Gaunce+Mallet for Maata. That would have made my day.

EDIT: In terms of who I'd have pick based on who was available:
Round 1: Collberg
Round 2: Severson
Rounds 5-7: Not a clue.

I was going to do round by round but there doesn't seem to be enough of a response for people willing to write down who they think should be picked so we should just post it all here.

Round 1: Canucks Pick: Brenden Gaunce; My pick: Gaunce

Round 2: Canucks Pick: Alexandre Mallet; My pick: Severson

Round 5: Canucks Pick: Ben Hutton; My pick: Ryan Olsen

Round 6: Canucks Pick: Wesley Myron; My pick:Jaynen Rissling (big dman;never have enough)

Round 7: Canucks Pick: Matthew Beatie; My pick: dont care

Lets see how wrong i am in the future

I'm happy with Gaunce at 26, would have taken Severson with our 2nd rounder though. Also happy with Beattie in the 7th round.

5th round: I probably would have gone with either Riley Barber, Anton Zlobin, Coda Gordon or Jesse Graham.

6th round: Maybe Matt DeBlouw, Joakim Ryan or Nikita Gusev.

Come on Gillis, make us all eat crow over the next few years!
