Last year I would say Morrow and Harrington were BPA but I'm not so sure about this years picks.
Depending on how much stock you put in rankings, I'd say Maatta was definitely BPA considering he was rated in the top 10 to 15 on most lists, and fell to us at #22.
I'm not really sure what to think. IMO they weren't BPA but I like the picks this year as players. I have to question some of those off the wall picks, just like I did Goligoski at the time. Not so much as players but couldn't they be gotten later?
No, we haven't. Ever since hes left we've needed a big physical defender, not another puck mover. We already have an Alex who's similar offensively to our old Alex.
When are ya'll going to realize our d corps started going down hill the year we traded for Leopold and the org became obsessed with possession dmen. We've become nothing but softer and weaker to play against since then, and we've had 3 embarrassing playoff exits since. The most recent of which our d was dismantled in. Its almost like bylsma is getting his way with the dman over sheros original "tough to play against" model.
And thats my main beef. When Shero first came I loved him because his whole montra was being difficult to play against physically. Guys like gill and McKee were what he wanted to add. Now its guys like leopold, martin, and yandle, apparently.
WE need to get back to the old model. Look no further than all the most recent cup champs going back to Anaheim before us. Ana, Det, us, chi, bos, and la all were physically dominant in their clinching series, and throughout most of their post season runs. That's absolutely no coincidence.
And I just thought of this, but part of our playoff problem could have to do with the fact that as playoff games get tighter and have more mucked up with clutching n grabbing it neutralizes the 2way ability of a lot of dmen who aren't strong enough to fight through the checks.

Pouliot was a reach but not as big as people think. He was easily top 15 and there were rumors he would be gone at 12. I will trust Shero when he says Pouliot was his guy.
Not sure why people are upset...GMs deviate from ISS rankings every year and it usually doesn't end up bad. Sexy picks bust too.

How many times prior to this weekend have you seen them play?
Neither. Just like the majority of everyone here. That doesn't mean I can't read scouting reports and form an opinion. Although I'm sure you scouted all these guys and would have picked Pouliot as well, right?
Jesus, it's sacrilege around here to question Shero's drafting, even though he hasn't drafted overly well since picking Staal.

Who the **** reads scouting reports, then says retarded **** like this? Honestly?
How about when you finally you know, see DP play, you admit you are a whiner and will actually stop using silly scouting rankings to tell you who will be a better pro?
The first time you see DP play you are going to feel like a total ass, bet that bro. Just like the paper scouts who whined about Morrow last year. He shut them right the **** up pretty fast.

Jesus, I get it, you drank the Shero kool-aid and will defend every pick he ever makes and that's awesome, but get off your high horse, bro. It must be nice being so much smarter and so much more informed on these guys than everyone else here, lol.
Just because I haven't scouted these players doesn't mean I can't form an opinion about them. I guess there should be a separate thread where the informed posters who actually watch all these prospects can talk, while all of us ignorant fans who read scouts and rankings can make wild speculations in another thread.
And just because Morrow had a great year doesn't automatically make every pick Shero makes a stud. That's just ignorance. Not to mention that Morrow was BPA (or close to it) so your comparison sucks. Pouliot was not BPA on anyone's list besides Shero and was a total reach at 8th overall. You can trust Shero all you want but untill Pouliot actually produced in the NHL, and proves that he's a better player than both Forsberg and Grigorenko I'm not going to be happy with the pick.

You saw lists from all 30 teams? Do share.
Pouliot was slated to go anywhere from 12-20. Not quite a "total reach". For example, he's just what Tampa needs and very easily could have gone to the Bolts at #10.

I don't know that you're wrong or right. I've taken exception with the fact that you are speaking in certainties. Go back and read the bolded part of the text that I quoted in my previous post.

So I should expect to see you criticizing Jiggy for being certain that it was a great pick?
I definitely don't think we could have gotten Maatta any later.
I was talking more Blueger and Sundqvist. Both totally out of left feild and taken pretty high. Blueger I saw once and he looks like a fine player, Krejci-ish, but was he even on the map as a 4th rounder. I guess SSM's is highly scouted so a lot of people knew about Blue.
People here get caught up in rankings and scouting reports. Teams don't follow rankings like TSN, ISS, Hockey writers, etc. Teams have their own rankings.
Pens probably ranked Pouliot higher than most teams. They have seen Pouliot so many times since we have Morrow on same team.
As for Forsberg, who knows if he's going to be a bust or All-Star player. There are no guarantees right now. We just have to wait in 2-3 years.
