Flyers Might Go With Leighton as Back-Up

Quote:
“We talked about Michael Leighton, who is still really our guy,” Holmgren said, according to Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer. “Ilya plays a lot of games and we’re counting on him playing a lot of games next year. We’ll do our work and come up with a good guy.”
Quote:
Leighton is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and is likely to take a significant pay cut.

I have to think this is posturing by Holmgren. IIRC, Leighton actually badmouthed the Flyers for dumping him in the minors and not giving him a chance. I mean, it just doesn't really make a lot of sense unless Holmgren was eyeing someone else's back-up and the price was too high and this is his way of trying to get the price down. I dunno.

I really would not like to see this, but Leighton at like $750K is not awful. And Bryz wouldn't have to worry about a younger guy trying to steal his job, because Leighton isn't stealing anything. I would interpret Holmgren's words simply as "Leighton is still our property."

Flyers just seem so uncertain about their goaltending that it can't be good for the morale.

Backing him up with a #3 goalie would definitely do that...

What?

Bryz is the starter. That is all.

Leighton was a key contributor to the Cup run and then tossed aside. I hope he gets used more this year, if not by Philly, then some team that can see what he can bring.

Leighton is not the problem as a back-up here, he's more than qualified. Bryz is though as the starter.

Isn't Hovinen coming over? He could seriously challenge for #2 if he does well at training camp.

Agreed. Deserves to be a back up at least.

He was also the key contributor as to why they lost to Chicago. In 2010-2011, the Flyers tried seeing what he could do after he recovered from his injury and it wasn't pretty.

He's not an NHL starter and is a questionable back up at this point in his career.

I don't want Leighton on the team. He lied about his health to get a contract which he then had to have surgery and messed up our plans.. If it wasn't for bob being good, we'd suck

If you're not a Flyers fan, you can't understand why most of us don't want him anywhere near this team. That's not a shot at all, it's not elitist, it's just an intimate understanding that drives our hatred. Yea, "he" (as in the defense, which goes under appreciated) carried the team in the Playoffs.

He literally lost us the Cup, he lied about his health to get a new contract, only revealing it afterwards, and he went AWOL during the Playoffs in 2011 and they literally couldn't find him, even to play the bench.

He doesn't need to be "given a chance," he's had a thousand and he's still a journeyman for a reason: he's not good.

Is there nobody in Philly's goaltending pipeline? Or was that Bob?

I'm betting they gun for Biron. Whether he leaves the Rangers or not is the bigger question.

We have Niko Hovinen who is a pretty good looking goalie from what people who have seen him have said.. He is a year away though at least

Bryzgalov seems like a one year on, one year off type of player. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he is one of the 5 goalies next season. He'll certainly rack up a ton of wins and, if the Flyers defense improves, his stats will be very good.

I agree with this. Thomas followed the formula for a few years if I recall correctly.

Leighton's not coming back the Philadelphia. That was said tongue and cheek by Holmgren.

OT;
Michael Houser wasn't drafted in his final year of eligibility. Attended Flyers camps last year and really stepped up his play in the OHL this year (OHL goaltender of the year). Had a really nasty glove save in the rookie game against the Caps last year. Wonder if Holmgren will try and lure him to Philadelphia's system.

And Holmgren just used a mid-2nd rounder on Stolarz. The Houser kid is intriguing, though. Since he will be 20 in September, he is eligible to play in the AHL this year, correct?
