Free Agency/off-season Thread

Just a thread for free agency, who do you think we will sign or attempt to sign.

This isn't a line combo thread. Just who do you think we might go after or do we stand pat?

There isn't much this year and players will likely be overpaid because the market is thin. Key players have already been re-signed by their teams.

I think our needs are:

1. Second Line 2nd Winger
2. Beef up our defense

We have the pieces already. I think we can get both of those issues done through free agency. Just don't know what we will pay for it.

So what do you guys think? Who do we go after? Price tag?

I'd definitely offer Ray Whitney a contract to fill the void on our second line. 4.5x2 maybe? Guy would look good beside Plekanec and Gionta. He'd set them up all day.

Gives the prospects we have some time - and might be enough to make us a contender.

On defense we have:

Subban - Gorges
Markov - Emelin
Kaberle - xxx
Diaz

I would like to add a shutdown defenseman (heavy D)
Who's available?

Personally, regarding UFAs, all I think we have to do is find a top 6 RW, and then just resign Moen and Staubitz.

Pacioretty-Plekanec-???????
Bourque-Desharnais-Cole
Moen-Eller-Gionta
Blunden/Geoffrion/Schultz-White-Staubitz

Markov-Subban
Kaberle-Gorges
Emelin-Diaz

Price
Budaj

Sure the D is smallish, but I don;t think it would be wise to correct that issue through UFAs, especially with Tinordi, Beaulieu, and Ellis about a year away.

We need a goalie to play in Hamilton no? I'd pay a vet 250k ala Sanford to backstop that young team that we are about to ice down there. Who availible?

I would like to grab Aaron Asham. He is a perfect 4th liner for us. White is still learning and who knows if we'll keep Moen. Just a thought at the right price.

I wouldn't mind signing Jagr to a one year contract... funny considering I did not want him last summer but his season changed my mind.

Ya, If Budaj or Price go down during the season we are kinda screwed. There are a lot of UFA goalies that could suit our needs. Good names and familiar names. Danis, ellis, Huet, Biron, Sanford, Pogge, Auld, Desjardins I wouldn't mind signing.

We'll see who is available but I think one of the names above will be a Hab beginning next month.

We need a 2nd line left winger and a shut down D IMO. Barring getting Parise and Suter I think we need to address those positions.

Patches DD Cole
XXX Plecks Gionta
Bourque Eller Leblanc
Moen White Staubitx/XXX

Markov Emelin
PK Gorges
Kaberle XXX
Diaz/Weber

at this point, (short of Parise/Suter of course), the only guy I'd outbid other teams for is probably Gaustad... and I suspect he'll be looking to go somewhere that he'll have a better shot at a top-9 role.

otherwise, Allen might be worthwhile, but with Jackman/Stuart not making it to the market, he may find himself getting astronomical offers and I wouldn't want to give him term & premium $$... especially with the quality group of young dmen we have coming up.

Lats, Moss, Sarich, Kubina, O'brien... all depth guys I'd target but not in a bidding war and only on short-term deal (1-2 years).

I wouldn't mind brining Yann Danis back.

And I'd love to resign Cedrick Desjardins. Guarantee him the backup spot after Budaj's done.

I would aim for one of: Penner, Huselius, Doan, Boyes, Jagr or even Semin to fill our need of a top 6 winger. Parise would be a dream but I get the feeling either Pitt or Det lands him. Would also love Prust for our fourth line.

On defence I would love any of: Jackman, Mitchell, Kubina, Sarich, Allen or Gleason. Again I'd obviously love Suter but don't see him coming here.

Pacioretty-Desharnais-Cole
Jagr-Plekanec-Gionta
Bourque-Eller-Leblanc
Prust-White-Moen/Geoffrion

Subban-Gorges
Markov-Emelin
Kaberle-Sarich
Diaz

would make me happy. of course add in the wild-card factor of Galchenyuk...

The first time that you and I actually agree (although I think the PK/Gorges pairing would clearly be the #1 d pairing)

Sharp isn't a FA...

Plus, any lineup with Kaberle, Gomez or Diaz in it is a bad one. We need to get rid of these guys.

Looks like Eric Fehr won't be tendered be in Winterpeg.

Awful year last year and fighting injuries but I'd look into him for the 3rd line. Might be a worthy gamble.

LeBrun thinks Ott would be a great fit in Montreal.

Not FA though. Would have to be through trade scenario.

I would cry for a 3rd line of Moen - Eller - Ott.

Hot damn.

Whitney - Plekanec - Gionta
Pacioretty - Desharnais - Cole
Moen - Eller - Ott
Bourque - Gaustad - White

Would never happen, but I'm putting in NHL '12 right now and simulating a season with that line-up!
