That's solid contract. Pretty long though. Now 3.9M may sound pretty hefty, but in five years if Ondrej reaches his potential, it's cheap contract. Good job.
This spells the end of Mason in Winnipeg. He is just aging now and his best years are behind him.
Mason knows and accepts his role here. I'm sure he had no illusions of being a starter this season. If the Jets can't sign Gus, Mason will be a solid veteran option for them and if not, he's among the most replaceable players we have.
While 3.9 may be slightly overpayment right now, I think in as early as a year from now, with 4 years remaining, this deal could be a bargain. This deal takes Pavelec to 30 years of age, I like that. Good term, affordable price, so I am pretty happy with the deal, myself.
I have some question marks about Pavelec, but at 3.9 over 5 years, well worth it in my opinion. Many deals are a risk, but this is one worth taking in my mind.
I'm really happy that we kept Pavs and didn't have to break the bank to do so. Its a long deal, but not a big enough cap hit that it'll cripple us if things don't pan out for both parties.
I agree its a bit rich.. BUT.....one thing I will say is I believe Pavs could be the goalie on a cup winning teammsome day. I think he has the talent base and mental make up to win a championship IMHO. They do have to coach him up a bit qnd he isn't Quick (who is) but he has some serious upside.
Feels good to see Pavs signed. Thinking rationally about his contract it is appropriate for market value. Pavs was pegged as key piece in the 'Peg and his contract reflects that and reasonable market value with the potential to be exceptional value in only a season or two.
For all the big talk from agent Walsh, the fact Pavs signed for 5 years is telling b/c he wants to be the man for a legit playoff contender so speaks well to the organization. Good deal, definitely not a Shawn Horcoff type of contract in terms of gross over-compensation based on a one recent fruitful season.

My thoughts, pretty much. I'd have preferred a shorter contract at this cap hit just in case that potential never materializes, but I don't think 5 years is long enough to really be concerned about.
If he does become the goalie I think he could be it will be a great contract for the team, but we won't know for a few years if that has happened.
I love this deal. Good term and sub 4 million per year. Nice to see us lock up a building block of the franchise. I'm thinking we'll see a Kane deal pretty soon.
Spending $3.9 on a starting goalie in the NHL is at the very least, the going rate (and at most, dirt cheap) if he's hard to score on and helps you win hockey games. I think most would agree that Pavelec is already both of those.
Glad to see him re-signed, but it's too much money for what he's done, IMO. I get paying for potential, but still think Jets overpaid here.
So what's Chevy supposed to do ? Let him walk? Start the season with Gus and Mason, or trade for a legitimate started and lose our youthful core? He did the right thing, signing pavs was a must and the numbers fit!

Thank god it wasn't Holmgren or Gillis making the contract, then. 10 years at $51 mil, anyone?
Good signing. A bit much now - a bargain in five years.
This is exactly how i feel.
It's a bit much for what he's done to date, but if he takes the steps we think he can/should, we'll look like bandits for the last 3 years of this deal.
Absolutely thrilled. I've said before, will say it again... it's a bit high sure, but Pavelec to me is worth a bit of a gamble.
If he reaches his potential during the term of this contract -- seems about right that he'd hit his peak in around 2-3 years -- this will be a bargain. If he doesn't, it's not like the contract is going to weigh us down that much... it's not some 10-year Bryzgalovish atrocity or anything. We have the cap space and will for the forseeable future.
So it's a low risk move for the Jets with a great potential payoff in the term and the numbers. Plus, Chevy didn't write a blank cheque and obviously stood by his limits while negotiating fairly.
Good job all around, so happy to have this done so fast. I never once doubted he'd be back in Winnipeg, but I was settling in to have negotiations be a long and frustrating (for an outsider) process.

Precisely. There's a lot of idiotic contracts in the NHL, I don't think slightly overpaying Pavelec at 3.9M for 5 years is even remotely in their league.
Pav's has also shown the potential to possibly out play it as well. If he can get a little more consistent, this could really help the building of the team.
I have a hard time believing that in 3-5 years he won't be worth this.
In todays market that is a good deal for both parties. We really have no alternative in net as Chevy bulids the team around him. We have a player that enjoys it here and is enjoyable to watch, is he perfect no but he will get better. Just my opinion!
