I would not be surprised at all to see the Avs and Mueller come to terms on a cheap one year contract in the next little while.

Mueller was god awful last season. Granted he was not in game shape, but still. I'm guessing they will try and sign him for less, or let him walk if he won't take less.

I don't think this move means Colorado will pursue a big time forward in free agency. If they do, I think it'll be an unrelated move because losing Mueller doesn't create any holes in Colorado's line up. The only hole is the one left by Jay McClement's imminent departure.

Landeskog - O'Reilly - Downie
McGinn - Stastny - Jones
Olver - Duchene - Hejduk
McLeod - ??? - Kobasew

Parenteau set to hit free agency apparently.

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nyi120624.html

He'd be a nice pick up for sure, definite upgrade.

I'm not a fan of this decision. I think he could have been tendered his QO just to keep him as an asset. I see his upside next season as 30-30 given the talent he has shown.

*Update: The sense I get is that the Avs simply felt the need to move on from Mueller. It’s too bad really, because a lot of his problems here were just purely bad luck. But after so much bad luck, the Avs felt the risk didn’t match the potential reward. One thing we know: if Mueller signs with another team, guaranteed he scores a goal against the Avs his first game against them. It’s what all ex-Avs do.

I forgot to mention that letting Mueller walk may also be a vote of confidence for Olver. Who knows though, this franchise is so secretive that Mueller may already be signed and he and management are laughing at Avs fans freaking out a little over this.

Even then, he's only played 32 games in two seasons and is one hit away from retirement. It's understandable why the Avs wouldn't want him at 2.5M and IMO, are likely trying to negotiate for less.

At 32 games over the past two seasons, I can't blame the Avs for not wanting to commit 2.5M to Mueller. I'm pretty confident that they will bring Mueller back at around 1.5-1.75M on a one year contract to let him prove hes healthy and back to performing.
The guy have some serious concussion history and didnt play much the last few seasons . The Avs have put so much time and energie for Mueller to get better that it would be silly to just let him go like that . My guess is the same as some of the posters above , i'm guessing that they want to keep him , but for less money.
If it's not the case and they dont want him anymore , they better have a rock solid plan B coz injuries or not , without Mueller we have some serious lack of skills on the wings.

That is unfortunate but understandable. I guess the Avs just felt that they couldn't invest the money and roster spot on a guy that could potentially miss a ton of time. I do wish him all the best if this report is true. Seemed like a really good team guy.

Lines not set in stone, but these are probably the forwards were going to see on opening night:

Landeskog-O'Reilly-Downie
McGinn-Stastny-Jones
???-Duchene-Hejduk
Mcleod-???-Kobasew
Olver

????--- Parise, Parenteau, Boyes, Burish, Gaustad etc.

Same. I could see him testing the market and seeing what his "worth" is and then re-negotiate with Colorado.

EDIT: Just caught BofC's update from Dater. That is too bad. Hopefully Mueller heals and is able to continue on with his career. But who knows, he could be back in Colorado by the start of the season.

I don't like this move at all. Losing possible asset for nothing. Obviously, If Avalanche medical staff know more about situation, I can understand. I mean, If there's no way he can play anymore, I understand, but other than that, no. This is just ****ing terrible. Now we are very ****ed. We don't have any wingers on this team.

Ok lets see.
We overpay Hunwick ,Mcleod and Jones

We let go of McClement and Mueller.

We draft only sub foot centers which we already have an abundande off and reach on our highest pick.

We extend Joe friggin Sacco

Why let go of Mueller? the only guy with somewhat chemistry with Duchene. How stupid are we? Could have atleast traded him for a 2nd. Ugh.

We have a marginal shot at Suter, Parise or Semin. Only a marginal one. Seems like we just want to make sure that we are at the capfloor and spend on guys who dont say much. I hate it. Tim Thomas for a 1st trade incoming. im in full meltdown mode.
My Sherman hate is back bigtime!

Parenteau has been playing with JT and had good numbers on his line , like Ivan said i'm not sure i want him with the Avs . I'm scare that Parenteau may have "the Rob Brown syndrome" .

Holy overreaction. This team is ****ed because they might lose a guy who barely played last year?

With Downie and McGinn, this team is in much better shape at wing and there's still UFA to come.

I love McClement but would you bring him back as a 4th line center for nearly $3 million?

Definitely questioning this, the only remedy to this would be signing him on July 1st. I'm losing faith in Sherman being able to negotiate with depth players, but then again he's proved me wrong with the trades so hopefully i'll be wrong.
This. Not to mention Jones got 4 million per year. In what world is Mueller overpaid at $2,5 million? He's got more potential than Jones anyway. Mueller is going to bounce back and this is going to bite our ***** for sure.
