Brendan Nash is probably a better defenseman than Barker. St. Denis certainly is.

I think the Habs have to fill a 2nd-line LW (or top-line LW if Pacioretty isn't played with Plekanec), 2nd-pairing D, and a couple 4th-line guys. I do think Moen's going to get a bigger-money, longer-length contract elsewhere rather than re-sign with the Habs.

Anyway, what I would like to see in a perfect world.

2nd-line LW: Sign Semin, Kostitsyn, or Penner OR Trade for Radulov.
2nd-pairing D: Sign Matt Carle or Bryan Allen OR Trade for Bouwmeester if Calgary really is looking to dump him.
3rd-line RW: Play Leblanc OR sign Kostitsyn, Latendresse, or Whitney.
4th-line C: No idea... Domonic Moore looks decent.
4th-line winger: Sign Fehr

McClement is awesome.

I'm officially on the McClement and Whitney bandwagon. McClement long-term, Whitney short-term.

I think we will sign either Gaustad or Prust and Allen on defense.

I keep looking at the free agent defensemen pool, and nobody jumps out. I really feel like we need to add a top 4 guy who can play the right side, but I don't want to sign a guy for 3+ years. I feel like Garrison could play beside Markov, they'd get mostly offensive zone starts, and the softer opponents match-up wise. He's likely looking at a 5+ year contract worth 5/year though.

So we're probably looking at an older guy 33-37 years old, who's most likely only a 5-6 guy, but could be more reliable defensively than Diaz, Emelin, Kaberle, or Weber. Here are some older, right handed defensemen:

Michael Rozsival, 33. Was making $3 million last season, cap hit of 5m. Played some reliable minutes for Phoenix, but I'm not sure he'd accept a two year offer.

Cory Sarich, 33. Cap hit of $3.6m last season. He hits, but I think he's a 5-6 defenseman. Could he play relatively soft top 4 minutes beside Markov? Possibly, he had good Corsi numbers last season.

Radek Martinek, 35. Limited to 7 games, due to concussion problems. If he's healthy he might be worth a really cheap contract, but at this point, he might be finished.

There's really not a whole lot of options out there. Some guys like Kubina, Corvo, and Wideman don't fit the profile in my opinion. There are younger guys, but again, I think we just need a stop gap option for the next 2 years until at least one of our defense prospects are ready.

I'd tell Justin Schultz if he's good enough, there's an opening in our top 4. It'd be pretty enticing to play alongside previous 60 point defenseman Andrei Markov I'd think.

I've never actually seen him play so I don't know how good he actually is, but he seems to think he'd jump into top 4 minutes with the team he signs with.

Whitney and McClement would be awesome. Add Brandon Prust for our 4th line and we are SET!

Markov - Subban
Emelin - Gorges

Whitney - Desharnais - Cole
Markov - Subban

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gionta
Kaberle - Diaz/Weber

Wojtek Wolski did not receive a qualifying offer from the Panthers.
The 26-year-old was acquired from the Rangers on Feb. 25 for defenseman Mike Vernace and a 2013 third-round pick. He seemed to wear out his welcome in Florida just as he did in New York, notching nine points in 22 games and being made a healthy scratch in the last five postseason games versus the Devils. In total, he had 12 points in 33 games (including the playoffs) -- certainly not worth $4 million he made.

Could be worth a look as a reclamation project...along the same lines as Boyes.

Zenon Konopka didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Ottawa Senators.
As a result, Konopka is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He can be the leader in penalty minutes if he finds a team that's willing to let him play 82 games on their fourth line.

Peter Mueller didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Colorado Avalanche.
Mueller is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. After missing the entire 2010-11 campaign and being limited to 32 games last season, Mueller is likely to sign a cheap, one-year contract. He has the potential to record 40-50 points next season if he can stay healthy, but he's not a safe bet.

WTF??

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is still hoping to sign Benoit Pouliot, even though his team didn't present the forward with a qualifying offer.
Pouliot's agent is still confident the two sides can get something done. It looks like the price of a qualifying offer was too rich for Tampa Bay, but both sides are still interested in inking a cheaper contract.

For unqualified RFAs, I would target

Latendresse (If salary less than $3 million)
Mueller (less than $3 million)
Konopka (less than $1 million)
Comeau (less than $1.5 million)
Porter (less than $1 million)
Brule (less than $1 million)

If we can sign one of these guys, we automatically become a wayyyy better team. Suter/Parise would be players you build around for many years. I seriously hope we can sign one of the 2!

I wouldn't touch Brulé with a 10-foot pole, and 3M is really a lot for two guys that are extremely injury prone.

I'd like Konopka, though.

My dream for this offseason is Whitney on a 1 year 6 million dollar deal, Jagr on a 1 year 4 million dollar deal and Rosival on a 2 year 6 million dollar deal.

Trade Kaberle to the Avalanche for a 3rd round pick

FORWARDS
Max Pacioretty ($1.625m) / David Desharnais ($0.850m) / Erik Cole ($4.500m)
Ray Whitney ($6.000m) / Tomas Plekanec ($5.000m) / Jaromir Jagr ($4.000m)
Rene Bourque ($3.333m) / Lars Eller ($2.100m) / Brian Gionta ($5.000m)
Travis Moen ($2.100m) / Blake Geoffrion ($0.700m) / Ryan White ($0.700m)
Aaron Palushaj ($0.750m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Josh Gorges ($3.900m) / P.K. Subban ($3.750m)
Andrei Markov ($5.750m) / Alexei Emelin ($1.700m)
Raphael Diaz ($1.100m) / Michal Rozsival ($3.000m)
Yannick Weber ($0.850m) /
GOALTENDERS
Carey Price ($6.100m)
Peter Budaj ($1.150m)
------
SALARY CAP: $66,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,958,333; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,041,667

I know they're weak at 4th line center, but I kinda like the looks of that 4th line especially if Geoffrion has a big summer and gains some strength.

Whitney and Jagr will provide a real cool element to Plekanec's line. Very opposite styles to the way he plays, Whitney can be the playmaker, Plekx can be the lightning who goes to the corners, Jagr can also make some plays and will attract opponents attention with his size and goal scoring abilities.

Love that 3rd line, especially if Bourque gets his head on straight and can provide them some sound defensive play.

No real "shutdown" line, but I feel that could be 3 lines who could play pretty regularly and a 4th line who can play some good defensive hockey perhaps as well.

Maybe sub out Jagr or Whitney and sign McClement to an overpayment for no more than 2 years.

I'm sure none of this will happen, thoughts anyways?

Oh, and the best part about bringing in Jagr, and Whitney for a year and Roszival for 2 is the way it lets the various youngins play in Hamilton and built some comradarie and chemistry there.

Something like this would be great.
Did you read that article about Semin?
http://hockeyanalysis.com/2012/06/15...ed-free-agent/

Pacioretty-Plek-Gionta as the top matchup line
Semin-Eller-AK as the second matchup line
Bourque-DD-Cole getting the softer offensive minutes

White is a lock on the fourth line, Moore would be good, so would Halpern. I don't really know which good fourth liners are avalaible but we should ideally get good defensive players. Guys who are good enough to eat up defensive zone faceoffs against other bottom six guys without getting stuck in their zone. I think Palushaj would probably do well in that kind of role though they may want to have him in Hamilton and only call him up when a top 9 gets injured.

Having Cole on the soft minutes line creates a huge mismatch for other teams and makes that line strong enough to handle harder opposition when, on the road, we don't get the matchup we want. Bourque playing those kind of minutes instead of Plekanec's shutdown minutes will no doubt help him a lot (if he rebounds, find a team that thinks he's a legit top 6 option and trade him there).

Technically, the RW could all be switched as they all have the ability to play top lines, so could Pacioretty and Semin. Thought I prefer having Pacioretty in hard minutes during a contract year. Gionta is a very good defensive player but if he's lost a step after his surgery (and due to age), AK can go next to Plekanec.

I also like the DD-Cole chemistry and the Eller-AK chemistry so that works well. Also, Eller seem like a better goal scorer than DD and both AK and Semin are pretty underrated playmakers. Despite the fact that they are often labelled as goalscorers, I think Cole and Bourque actually fit that mold more.

For the D, I think Gorges-Subban stay as the shutdown pair. I'd like Allen, he'll be cheaper than Carle, who I think the Flyers are discussing an extension with anyway. Not sure I would actually want to commit longterm to a D except Suter. That makes Bouwmeester interesting as he only has 2 years left. We might also get an asset as Calgary might treat the trade as a cap dump. Though I can totally imagine him breaking his ironman streak in the first preseason game just because it's us. For the rest, Markov is a lock on the second pair and I think Emelin is on the third. Kaberle playing soft opposition with that offensive third matchup line setup might work well. That leaves Diaz and St-Denis though there will probably be injuries. I could also see them trading Kaberle considering the weak UFA market.

That lineup looks about as strong as the one we had at the beginning of the year wich was top 10 in ES play.

I think I might have thought too much about this.

Carle is really not that good of a d-man. Go to the flyers board an see what they have to say about him.

I know you always have to be wary about putting too much stock into what a fan base has to say about a player of theirs, be it high praise or immense disdain...but across the board he's seen as a pretty average d-man.

And I've never once been impressed by him. And in a pathetic market he'll probably come close to 5 years and 5 per year.

Gross
