Who will be this year's Panthers?

Which team will actually make a surprising, mind-boggling shopping spree the same way the Panthers did last year? There's definitely no short list of veteran free agents that a team can amass and copy the 2011-12 Panthers path.

Some potential players:
Brad Boyes
Ryan Smyth
Christian Huselius
Olli Jokinen
Paul Gaustad
Dennis Wideman

I don't think quite at the same level, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ducks be very active in free agency this year. Murray said he didn't want to follow the same path that we've done the past two years. Tons of cap space, and we're usually closer to the ceiling than floor.

Yuck! A pretty underwhelming list.

Honestly it's somewhat comparable to the ones that Florida signed last year (Theodore, Jovo, Kopecky, Upshall, Fleishmann, Goc, Bergenheim), maybe a notch less prominent. And, thus the overwhelming skepticism about their performance last year.

Well, we have room for maybe one, possibly two forwards, and one defenseman. Not quite the overhaul FLA went through.

The Stars need an entire second line, plus replacements for Ott/Robidas/Morrow if they get moved. I wouldn't be surprised to see the team add some shorter term older UFAs to reach the floor at least. Whether that translates into some sort of playoff push is certainly doubtful.

Not really. Once the Avs sign all their RFA's they will be at the floor and then can just add whatever UFA's they want.

I dunno, but as overpaid as Campbell has been the last few years I sincerely doubt there's any team in that mould who comes even remotely close to adding an impact player the way the Panthers added Campbell.

Which team has an entire roster to fill just to get to the cap floor?

And optimist says Dallas needs an entire third line and hopes that we have the pieces to put together a good top 6.
