Undrafted Free Agents?

Some of you were talking up Nick Ebert from Red Bank. 5'11" two way defenseman, started at #70 and dropped to #96 but in 5th/6th round people ranked way lower were being picked. We went with a guy who was rated #60 in round 6 (hard to argue that) but if this guy is available in free agency do we invite him to camp?

Having no 7th round pick is meaningless because it only blocks us from choosing two players as we would have drafted 2nd to last anyway.

If he doesn't get drafted, he'll certainly get an invite. What a drop. Top 5 pick to undrafted (that would be insane)

Is Ebert even eligible to be signed as an undrafted FA yet? He's still draft eligible next year, right?

Absolutely give him a chance. See if our coaches can have a positive influence on him.

He was projected as top 5 potential? When? His midterm rank was #70 NA skater...

Saugus: What are the rules for undrafted players being FA? I thought they could sign if they want and if not signed are eligible for the draft ? I honestly don't know though.

Undrafted CHL players can attend NHL prospect camps. There's a window during the summer where teams can sign undrafted North American players (with remaining draft eligiblity) to ELC's. It happens sparingly but it's not unheard of. The Kings did this with goalie Martin Jones a few years back. The Sharks did it with Michael Sgarbossa after the 2010 Draft and he ended up winning the OHL scoring title this year.

The problem is whether or not you want to commit one of your 50 contracts on a guy. After the draft ended last year, there was some kid who had gone undrafted sitting a few rows in front of me. One of the Kings' head scouts didn't even wait 30 seconds to jump into the stands to offer him an invite to their prospect camp.

If he isn't signable that's too bad we don't have that crappy 7th because it would have been worth a flier on him. I'd love a NJ guy on the team. I know that's a BS intangible, but still.

Interesting. I hope we invite him to prospect camp then, if he isn't drafted.

I'm standing here shaking my fist in the air saying "DAMN YOU LOS ANGELES!!!!"

I really would have liked to have Ebert come in. Maybe we shouldn't have given up that 7th round pick so easily :-)

Is there anyone else not drafted that might be worth a look? Anyone rated highly that got passed over? I know some of you liked Slepyshev and he didn't get drafted.

Europeans are a slightly different story. You can invite them to camp, but you can't sign them. The Flyers made that error with Tomas Hyka last year. Slepyshev must have raised some "....so I signed a five year KHL deal" type red flag.

Ebert was passed in the draft over 210 times, by 29 hockey teams. I'm not going to worry about passing on him just because he grew up in Livingston.

hey so what about that slepshyev kid that nobody drafted this year? the one sarge gave some kudos about. if he was, say, invited to camp, would it be the same as tomas hyka last year with the flyers? or is he eligible to be signed to a contract if they felt justified offering one?

Slepyshev would be ineligible to sign, because he's going back into the draft next year.
