Tie Breaking Procedure

Some where question this in the last weeks, it's from NHL.com standing page, at the end

If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but your avatar looks quite a bit like one of the Olsens and not very much like Jennifer Garner.

that's probably the most meaningless one, considering it will have zero effect at seasons end. you have to get points with the games in hand, no reason to reward a team with a higher seeding based on chance.

Its not chance is potential. The team with a game in hand can get 1 or 2 points that the other team (with the game already played) can't. Playing that game in hand gives them the opportunity to break the tie and take lead in points.

The tie break is based on math. Team with a game in hand has a possibility of breaking the tie. Something the other team doesn't have. Its like a dynamic advantage; one which if you don't matherialise into points, goes away. But till the game is played, it is present.
