A few people have Kadri/McKegg listed as the 3rd line centres for the Leafs going forward...

Usually your 3rd line centre is good defensively. Theyre usually a main piece of the PK and for shutting down the oppositions finest. Kadri/McKegg are both below average defensively, I don't really see that as an option.

#1 Goalie
#1 Centre
3rd Line Centre

Those are the main holes I think.

D looks pretty set long-term, with Phaneuf/Rielly/Gardiner/Gunnar/Franson/Percy/Blacker/Finn duking it out.

Top 6 wing looks pretty set with Kessel/JVR/Kadri/Kulemin/Frattin/Ashton duking it out.

#2 Centre should be one of Grabo/Colborne/Bozak. Frattin/D'Amigo/Kulemin/Ashton could make good long-term 3rd line wingers (essentially whichever ones can't crack the top 6 are physical enough / defensive enough to be really solid 3rd line guys).

Reimer/Scrivens are likely good second tier NHL goalies, but way too early to at all expect either to fill the #1 role longterm. Big question mark there.

Joffrey Lupul - xxx - Phil Kessel
James Van Riemsdyk - Mikhail Grabovski - Nazem Kadri
Nikolai Kulemin - Tyler Bozak - Matt Frattin
Bradley Ross - Joe Colborne - Carter Ashton

Morgan Reilly - Jake Gardiner
Dion Phaneuf - Carl Gunnarsson
Cody Franson - Jesse Blacker

James Reimer
Ben Scrivens

This is what I would do at least. I still have faith in Reimer. I have little faith in Colborne and think he'll top out as our new David Steckel. Kulemin - Bozak - Frattin becomes a very good secondary scoring/checking line. We keep Gunnar with Phaneuf but use them as a second pairing. etc. etc.

Is the traded column people who were abducted by aliens or are we getting some sort of return? Are we only trading for draft picks and why didn't any of the draft picks pan out?

We are getting draft picks for most that we find a way to turn into as many 1sts as we can get and add in the young guys that have some value and didn't get traded, then we get a 1C with the picks/players.

I'm pretty sure Carlyle will be using Grabovski as the "3rd line Center" at least according to your definition of a shut-down, defensive line.

It's actually, historically speaking, the line Carlyle ices the 2nd most of his forward corps.

So I dunno, doesn't that mean the shut down line is the 2nd line?

Either way, Leafs need a 2nd line scoring C and a top line scoring C.

Colborne should be one of the two, most likely the 2nd line C.

Bozak is maintaining the interim position until a more suitable replace is found, although he did a great job last season, and I for one would be happy with his continued embauchement in that role.

When Bozak is up for contract renewal it'll be a different story but for now a 1C that isn't a super beast but only costs $1.2M is in it's own right pretty beastly.

JVR - Kadri - Kessel
Kulemin - Grabovski - Frattin
Ross - Colborne - Biggs
D'Amigo - Mckegg - Ashton

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Percy
Finn - Blacker

Reimer
Who Knows?

Explanations:
Kadri - It's too early to write him off as top 3 material IMO. He plays 30x better with solid wingers, he has a strong passing game, and I think simplifying things would do wonders for him. If Bozak is given time there, why can't Kadri? Kadri is top 6 or Bust.

JVR - This is IF he can remain healthy, and I'm confident in the judgement of our medical staff, so I think he'll do okay. He will be an offensive force, I can see 35 - 35 production coming out of him on the 1st line.

Pretty close I would say, next year he should be a regular top 4 on the Marlies, and should be the second call up to the Leafs after Holzer, it would probably be based on him being a two way defenceman, and not just one dimensional

Joe Colborne is gonna be an interesting player going forward. He could very well be our next David Steckel or he could that long sought after #1C. Only time will tell, but I couldn't agree more with that lineup.

Kadri is gonna make the team this year, he has nothing left to prove in the minors.

And I really REALLY wish people would stop saying that he is a defensive liability. Kadri had the second highest +/- on the team.

People who hate on him are really out to lunch. There is not a doubt in my mind that he makes it this year.

Frattin and Kadri will both be on the right side come October. Kadri on the 2nd line and Fratts on the 3rd.
