[COL] Shane O'Brien (3 Years, $6 Million - AAV of $2 Million)
Meh, it's not bad. Worse comes to worse, we trade him if he isn't needed. But we can't just rely on our AHL defensemen this early. We need to lock up legit NHL talent too. And Shane fits a bottom pairing role quite well.
Is not about the money, is about S ****ing OB taking up a roster spot from prospects with WAY higher potential than him, Elliot, Barrie and Gaunce.
Maybe they feel these guys aren't ready? You just don't say. Well he has high potential. Go let him play. It doesn't work like that. IS he ready? They resigned a veteran rugged defenseman. Solid 5-6 guy. Nothing more or less.

Elliot and Barrie has already spent quality time in the NHL last season. Elliot played 40 games and Barrie played 10. Gaunce has also spent 2 quality seasons in the AHL.

Right. Why create an entitled attitude with our defense prospects? If they are ready to play in the NHL, I want them to steal a spot from an established defenseman. Let's keep them honest and hardworking.

Then they will get their chance this season to earn a roster spot. Nothing wrong with competition.
Don't understand why people on this board don't understand basic hockey. If the avs have "better" players in the minors than SOB, than eventually they'll "earn" spots in the show. Its not like SOB has a no movement clause. If in 3 years its time to trade him, that's what will happen. If carter and richards can move after signing long term deals, it can't be that hard to move an affordable contract at the deadline. Guys with character and toughness have lots of value at the deadline.

Exactly. If they are as good as they are then they can possibly make the team by wowing the coaching staff. If not then they will need to continue their development. They will get their chance.
Would you really scratch a NHL defenseman on a 1 way contract you've signed for another 3 years for a young player?
It's a lot better to do that then just assume a young defensemen, who didn't show much last year, will be ready this year, and fail to build depth. The contract is reasonable, and he has shown some good stuff. A trade for a pick or prospect if one of our young defensemen do push him our isn't going to be tough. I'd rather have the security.

How do you figure it would be SOB getting scratched? You don't know what the roster will be on game one of the season. Who is to say O'Byrne or Hunwick don't get rubbed out? Hell even Hejda? Why leave a hole in your depth by relying and putting everything on an inexperienced defenseman?

This of course is without even considering the possibility of injuries... which all Avs fans know tend to come in bunches. When you have NHL talent in the AHL you are in good shape. That's what we need to see prolonged success.
I never liked O'Brien when he was on the Canucks. I always felt Shane thought he was a better player than what he was. He always thought the fans were there to see him instead of realizing he's a serviceable 5-6-7 dman. If he plays his role, he'll be valuable. If he thinks he's a reincarnation of Bobby Orr, I feel sorry for the Avs.
Every good move Avs mgmt makes is followed by a bad move (eg: acquire McGinn/Sgarbossa followed by re-signing Matt-Hunwick, sign Duchene...re-sign SOB).
This is such a bad term, I don't know what they're thinking with bringing back Hunwick or SOB. If you're not a playoff team then you don't keep bringing back the same players. Go with a different bottom pairing dman, this guy is bad whenever he has to play 20 mins (which will happen at some point). Barrie is already better, Gaunce is probably better, and Elliott is gonna be better so wtf are they doing wasting spots on these guys? I expect them to waive SOB or Hunwick at some point or they really are nothing more than accountants.
And I don't buy this **** about the young dmen "earning" their right. They have the ****ing talent and they won't adapt to the NHL unless you let them play in the NHL. Give them bottom pairing minutes at least (they won't do worse than SOB) and if they do well then give them more mins but don't just keep them in the A****ingHL forever.
Gaunce when I saw him play for the Mississauga Majors was a better dman than SOB is now.
