I would be happy with this:

steady defense
not a superstar but not a project
slight improvement on our worst defensemen
reasonable price on contract amount/length.
just until our towers and/or klefbom are ready to step in.

Because we're trying to build a championship team. Luongo chokes in the playoffs. He might get you to the dance, but he can't dance when he gets there.

With the Oil apparently asking permission for Klefbom to come to training camp, could this be a signal that they are not going to do anything to upgrade their defence (again)?

I doubt it didn't ST say at the draft Klefbom will have another year in the SEL?

Seriously though, I think Kulemin is a good target if he could be had for a decent price.

What was the general consensus on Mueller yesterday? To risky because of concussion issues?
I wonder if he qualifies for bonuses? Isn't there some sort of clause for guys that have lots of injuries that can get bonuses on a one year?

I don't think he or Latendresse are really the answer to much, but if you can get them on a bargain deal it's not that bad I guess. Just as long as you don't forget to make actually impact signings.

I think he could be a decent pickup, but I think other issues need to be addressed first with our assets.

Kulemin hits , scores and plays LW .. Would take him if the other option is Smyth.

Him being a Russian makes it even better.

3rd line of Kulemin-Horcov-Yakupov

I was under the impression that you could only get bonus' on entry level deals and 1 year contracts when over the age of 35. If there is an injury clause somewhere in there too then I have't heard of it.

I was thinking of the Russian factor as well, but from what I've read, sometimes it is a good thing, sometimes not.

They could always get Jokinen to player there, Finland's not far from Russia.

What players may earn in performance bonuses?

Performance bonuses will only be permissible for the following types of players: (1) players on entry-level contracts; (2) players signing one-year contracts after returning from long-term injuries (players with 400 or more games who spent 100 or more days on injured reserve in the last year of their most recent contract); and senior veteran players who sign a one-year contract after the age of 35.

Not enough games as Mueller only played 250ish.

Didn't Ottawa bring Zibanejad to camp and then send him back to Sweden? If we could work out something like this for a cash payment to his SEL team for letting him start the season late, I would be all over it. Almost every player says that no matter what they expected, their first NHL camp is tough. Getting Klefbom's out of the way this year, so he knows what to expect for 2013 TC, is a good idea imo.

Would be a good idea, just seems rare with guys who plan on playing in Europe. Although money talks.

Just throwing out this scenario. Would anyone be down for this?

Trade Hemsky to Pittsburgh for Martin after Penguins strike out on Parise.
Trade Gagner and Pitlick to Toronto for Kulemin, Bozak, and Franson after Leafs sign Schultz.

Hemsky for Martin?

Hell no.

I'm not giving much more than Potter and a pick for Martin. We are doing them a favour and Hemsky would get us a decent return at TDD.

As for the TO one I don't see TO doing it unless you are taking a salary dump.

No to both. And the Leafs won't sign Schultz.
If we want Kulemin, I'd offer Pitlick or Hamilton and a 2013 2nd. The guy's value took a huge hit last year.

All the Pens, realistically, are looking for is Cap relieft and space, so something like Potter + for Martin shouldn't be so unreasonable, they save a ton of Cap space in that deal for a guy who would have had a similar role to Martin on the Pens.

That's an interesting one, not sure the Leafs do it, maybe you'd have to add Peckham, but getting a center back makes a bit of a short term difference.

While this is true, it is foolish to rush him into the league. Let him gather confidence in the SEL.
