This. SOB isn't as bad as some have made him out to be, but he's a stop-gap #6/7. Why deprive a career journeyman of his journey?

And it was clear that neither one of them are ready.

Good signing by the Avs.

I don't mind him coming back, but I dislike that it'll be for three years.

I feel like people who like O'Brien are more fun in real life

He's a 'good 'ol boy' like others have said, he's big, physical, sticks up for his teammates, is usually fairly reliable, and every now and again he puts on little stickhandling clinics that sometimes gets him in trouble, but are usually entertaining. By all accounts he's also fun as hell off the ice. I dunno, he seems very likeable to me.

3 years is a little unnecessary. What do Avs fans think of SOB? My opinion was wavering, but had ended up having enough of his antics on the Canucks.

Maybe Avs mgmt is just trying to appease Don Cherry....only explanation for this plus using all six draft picks on Canadian born forwards from the CHL/OHL considered to be "hard-working" (including one named Bourke).

Essentially it boils down to either

I'm more than happy with this signing. He's a player that's respected and loved by everyone in the locker room from what I've seen. He's a serviceable 5/6th guy too.

2 Million is not that much money for a team with more money than they can (want) to use.

A 3 year term means nothing as well because I guarantee we can trade him within those three years if need be. Teams are willing to pay, albeit not much, for a d-man like him.

I think people should stop acting like the Avs signed Tyler Arnason to a monster contract.

Keep in mind how much Hal Gill went for as a rental.

Its not crazy to think SOB could fetch a 2nd or 3rd rounder as a rental in year 3.

I'm not saying its a terrible contract, it's not great but the $ value is low and Colorado doesn't have to worry about cap space any time soon/ever. If he's a #5-6 then it's a very reasonable deal. Although the 3years maybe be a little too long, but at the low AAV, it's not that big of a deal. If he's a #7 on the other hand, then it's a bad contract. But hopefully he plays for the whole season 70+games.

But it's deals like these that makes me happy that Doug Armstrong is our GM. Roman Polak is sign for 5 years at avg of 2.75 and just resigned Jackman, a UFA, for 3 years @ 3.12 per. Thanks Army!

Pretty much exactly what i figured he'd go for. Not a sweetheart deal, but pretty much market value right now. This year's UFA crop is just abysmal. You know that's the case when SOB makes an appreciable dent in it.

He's not great, certainly has his *issues*, but he's also not nearly as bad as some make him out to be. A solid #5 d-man, who can play a bit of top-4 in a pinch. Big, stands up for teammates, very serviceable when he plays within his limits. Also seems to be the sort of guy who pairs well with a higher risk puck mover when he's got his head screwed on straight.

Honestly i'm not sure why the Avs were the one to hand him the deal, as they seem to have enough other options and the desire to go after an upgrade. But i expected SOB to have a fairly significant group of suitors if he hit the open market on July 1st.

To answer your last point, O'Brien is by far the meanest defender the Avs have. Johnson, obviously, has that side, but outside of that, no one else is close. O'Byrne and Hejda are big, strong guys, but neither has a great deal of grit. Wilson throws big hits, but, again, he doesn't have the nastiness OB does.

So, yes, Colorado has a hundred spoons and O'Brien is their only knife.

Yes the meanest, but whenever someone wanted to fight, he walked away like a ****.

If he stops trying to do too much (aka Shane Orr'Brien), then I am fine with this deal. When he plays HIS game, he is very effective. When he tries to do too much and be a "game changer," well... he changes the game alright... in favor of the opposition. A good thing about this signing is that the team seems to love him.

Ah, good for Shane. From his Canuck days I remember he's a fun guy to have on your team. You need to have a good sense of humor though to appreciate his game though...

IMO it's one year too much, but the Avs have the capspace and SOB's serviceable and a good locker room guy, so it's not the end of the world.

And think of how hard he's going to party tonight...

O'Brien exceeds expectations as a 3rd pairing defenseman. He's over his head as a 2nd pairing defenseman. He's an absolute trainwreck on the top pairing.

I'm not as disappointed as some other Avs fans, but we desperately need to add a quality D (like SUTER!) if we want to avoid having to watch O'Brien try to play more minutes than he should. If O'Brien is playing 18-20 minutes a night next season, it'll be a long and terrible season.
