Tavares isn't getting traded. We need him more than we need any combination of players/prospects/picks that any team could put together.

Being a stingy cap floor team, there's no way that the Isles would want Vanek's contract, even when it's worth that money. (And I think they are done handing out giant long term contracts after Yashin and Dipietro) They are better off with cheap contracts to hit the floor and mooch off the revenue share the Charles Wang way.

I don't think Buffalo has what it takes to get Tavares out of New York

I don't think there's any situation in which NYI would even consider trading Tavares.

However, in terms of value. Legitimate franchise players don't come around often in the NHL. I personally believe Tavares is one. And there are only a handful around. But would NYI consider something like this:

Tavares - franchise center

for

Myers - not very proven (as a star player), but lots of potential
Vanek - a proven star winger, obviously not without his flaws
Hodgson - potential to be a solid contributer, fills a bit of the gaping hole at center if NYI deal Tavares, and Buffalo can let one of their centers go as they have many, plus 2 new top center prospects.

It's funny. Buffalo and NYI have traded franchise players before where Buffalo got the best player in the deal. So here's how it would go

Lafontaine + Wood (3rd line winger)

for

Turgeon + Hogue (2nd line winger) + Krupp (2nd pairing dman)

... So there you are. I think Tavares will have a Lafontaine-class career. But Sabres don't have a Turgeon-type talent. So there's no basis for a deal.

Cheers,

Dan-o
