Per Mark Messier: yup

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/coyo...hip-award.html

As a youngster growing up watching the Edmonton Oilers, Coyotes captain Shane Doan had plenty examples of how to become an on-ice force who played with skill and power. But Doan also tried to mirror the leadership qualities on display, never wanting to be solely identified as a hockey player.

"I think that's just doing what you're supposed to do, and that's kind of the way I've been taught," he said.

Doan was recognized at the NHL Awards on Wednesday in Las Vegas with the Mark Messier Leadership Award, presented to the player who is a role model in the game and in the community. Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings and Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers were also nominated, and the winner was selected by Messier.

"It's such a huge honor to be associated with Mark Messier," Doan said. "He's the leader that all leaders in sports are measured by. To have any association with him is pretty special, and to be recognized off the ice it's special. You appreciate that, and I'm very honored."

"per" Mark Messier?

You are going way overboard.

I guess that makes Tom Barrasso comparable to Georges Vezina since he won an award named after him one time.

Did you read the article? Messier picked the winner.

So, literally , mark messier agrees that Shane Doan is Messieresque in leadership qualities....

I happen to agree with you.
He is a true leader, and even though he has maybe 4 or 5 years left in him, I would love to see him take the likes of Hodgson and Vanek under his wing and make them better players overall. He's a dedicated player who I feel would excel with the likes of younger line mates that he could feed.

Here's a clue....someone HAS TO win it.

Just because they win it, doesn't mean they have the same attributes that Mark Messier did.

There are honestly people who are going to argue that Doan isn't one of the better and more recognized leaders in the league? His age, diminshing numbers and potential contract demands are legitimate arguments for not wanting him here, but to think he wouldn't be a leader and positive influence in the lockerroom is just asinine.

Ok so he's not friggin Mark Messier, what's your point? He's been recognized several times for his leadership abilities and even won awards relating to it. God sometimes people get so caught up on the stupidest things.

Haha.... Listen, just because myself and Mark Messier agree that Doan is a legendary leader doesn't mean you have too...

Don't you think it's a little funny that you brought up Messier as an example, and then there's a Messier award, with the winner chosen by Messier, and ole' Mess picked Doaner?

I think the definition of an award named after someone, particularly one of this nature (intangible like leadership) is that the player who wins it shares some of the attributes of the awards namesake...

I'll drop it if you want, just stop arguing because I crushed it.

Awards:
Food for thought, the captain previous to Doan in Phoenix? Teppo Numminen. Would Teppo sell Buffalo as a destination to Doan?

That said, he's not going to single-handedly cure the issues of the team but he might help. The roster tooling needs to continue.

My point is that Shane Doan is getting older by the minute and his skills have diminished over the last three seasons and will most likely continue to do so.

I'm still waiting to hear all the great Shane Doan leadership stories...you know, the legendary one's.

Like how he lifted a mediocre Phoenix squad year after year to deep playoff runs.

Monthly one... Messier drinks from time to time....

The yearly award winners:

Chelios
Sundin
Iginla
Crosby
Chara
Doaner

Shane Doans cards will read.....

Shane Doan
Legendary Leader
Buffalo Sabres

Oh yeah, Doaner hands out business cards out to the opposing team, players and coaches, 82 games a year... Why? Consummate professional.

Also, if I'm Darcy my #1 target is the Blushin' Russian Alexander "****" Semin. Cheaper than Parise and motivated to prove to the Caps he can be part of a winning core. Plus a Russian friend for his future international center Grigorenko
